OK shock gurus, I need some info. Brain is running a few quarts low. .
I had the chance to get a truck camper last week, so I found myself needing new shocks. I wanted Rancho 9000X, but couldn't find any in stock in Texas and couldn't get them from the Internet houses in time to support the trip. So, I found a dealer in Colorado Springs (Tanner 4x4) that had a set in stock, and bought them from him when I stopped in Colorado Springs to have Torklifts installed. I figured I would get them installed at a later stop when I had time, and possibly put on new fronts as well.
Tanner sold me P/N 99269, said it was the right shock for the truck. When I went to have them installed, the guy told me he thought the right P/N was 99274 (I think). Went back to Tanner, and he showed me in the book that the two shocks were the same bore, valve, etc, with only difference being the 99269 had a 1/4" longer stroke. Seemed reasonable so I took off (really pressed for time as I had to get back in Texas for a flight to LA).
After being able to get to a computer, I looked at the part numbers on the Rancho site, and they were different from what the dealers had in their book! Wrote the Rancho guys an e-mail, and they said 99269 is the wrong shock for the truck, when I pointed out the dimensions and such are the same they said "but they are the wrong shock for your application".
So, I am trying to decide whether to install these shocks, or sell them down here and mail order the other part number. Seems like a waste of time though if the shocks are ostensibily similar. Any thoughts fellas?
PS - there are a lot of dueling part numbers out there for these shocks, buyer beware.
