I am getting a rattling noise on deceleration, not all the time. Sometimes on acceleration. Could this be tensioner pulley or idler pulley?... ... ... ... . Something more critical?

Does it sound a little like preignition rattle on a high compression V8 gas engine using low octane gas?

The common cause and a common high failure item is the FCA. Fuel Control Actuator. Many if not all of the HPCR engines require replacement of this part around 100k miles. It usually causes a slight rough idle also.

It formerly cost about $150 from Geno's or Cummins. You can change it yourself.

I believe it is engine, just seems to be related to fuel delivery, either acceleration or deceleration. And yes it sounds similar to a gas/octane preignition pinging

Injector rattle is only going to happen on acceleration. You won't hear it on decel.

Fill out your truck info, year, trans, mods, etc so we have a fighting chance to tell what it is.

Since it happens on both accel and decel I would be looking at the clutch or TC depending on what you have. Another place to check is exhaust system mounts. If you break one mount and the pipe contacts anything it will setup al sorts or rattles, clinks, and vibrations that are tought to trace.

Sounds similar to what my 03 was doing. Changed the FCA and still had the rattle. A reputable diesel shop checked it out. I had two bad injectors, a couple more that were sort of okay and the other two were okay. Since I have to go a fair distance for this work and while they were in there I changed all the injectors and crossover tubes. Damned expensive but rattle is gone.

Its an 03 305hp, 48RE, PPE Exhilerator, TS Performance, banks intake manifold, banks ram air intake, open exhaust. Truck has always ran fine. Took the Ts performance unit off, thought maybe too much advance. Still hearing this "rattle" just for brief moments on decel. Kind of comes and goes depending on speed and if it just came off heavy acceleration or could be just light accel. No real consistency to when it happens. I also have an 04. 5 with smarty s06 and everything else pretty much the same except for a airdog. Have never experienced the noise with the 04. 5

Tightened clamps, none were noticeably loose. Does not seem to have an affect on noise. Still happening usually closed throttle with coasting up to intersection or letting off from highway speed.

What is the PPE and did you remove it?

I would be taking a close look at flex plate bolts and then watching the flex plate as the throttle is stabbed. See if you can see any extra movement and hear the noise as throttle is applied and released.

Pacific Performance Engineering downloader similar to a smarty s06. I had removed the Ts performance unit that was stacked with it. No difference, I am going to put it back to stock again and check it. I cannot recreate the situation or noise with the vehicle sitting still. It is not a drive train noise, it is corresponding with rpm decrease. Just a brief, loose metallic rattle not continuous, maybe 1 maybe 2 seconds at most.

That is not a given when the flex plate is an issue. It may not make any noise when there is no load on the engine and minimla to start with in gear.

However, switching from load to no load on decel can cause noise if the bolts are loose. You really need to check the TC to flexplate bolts and get a good look at the them to see if they are walking in the holes. If it is the crank bolts or center section that may not be apparent until it is disassembled.

Any time you run added power on a stock TC those bolts become a check point. The TC cover will flex under power and work things loose enough they will walk in the holes until they tear out.

So, you have the PPE stacked w/power puck? yes? I would bet it's the PPE.

I had a similar rattle with my original TST, it started out a little rattle just after acceleration, when my speed would catch up with my fuel, and you start to back out of the throttle, rattle rattle rattle. Then it got increasingly worse and much louder, almost like an AK47 under my hood.

When I removed the TST, (it had the 03 twins program), and sent it in for an upgrade to the 4 program model, all rattling ceased. I am still using it today without any rattle.

Adjusting the TST, even turning it off, before the upgrade did not change the rattle, only when I completely removed it from my truck did it go away, so I new that was the problem.

I know the PPE is a downloader, not a fuel box like the TST, but that is where I would start. Try putting your truck to stock, see if it goes away, then try reloading the PPE, check results. You may have to download a more current flash to the PPE.

Chrysler dealer says bolt on flex plate are fine. I did remove the TS Performance unit earlier that helped. I then brought the PPE download from performance down to towing. Has almost all but eliminated the rattle on decel. I will put to stock and drive a couple days and see if it clears up. Thanks for the input.

On second day of driving truck at stock level. I am still getting (although less noticeable) the rattle or ak47 sound. It is not very loud, well atleast to someone else, it is to me. Although I don't turn on the radio so I can just listen to that Cummins hum. Still searching for the rattle.

Just a thought, when I removed my TST, I disturbed both the CAM/CRANK POS Sensor, because the TST harness intercepts both. You might try disconnecting and cleaning both connections, see if it makes a difference.
