My RB4 Nav Radio was working perfectly until Monday, May 28th. I took out the nav CD and played two music CDs. About 4 days later I put the nav CD back in, and started to experience problems.

A msg appeared: "Resetting the system for navigation. " But shortly thereafter, another msg appeared: "Reading error. Please eject and check disc. " The instruction manual suggested cleaning the disc and allowing the radio to reset in an open area with unobstructed view to the sky, both of which I did. No improvement.

Sometimes the nav system will operate and display the MAP screen correctly. However, it will not display the ROUTE or DESTINATION screens. The "Eject and check CD" error message always appears.

Usually, when a destination is input into the system, the CALCULATING bar will move across the bottom of the screen, but then it freezes and shortly thereafter the error message appears.

Occasionally it seems that the CALCULATIONS are completed and the ROUTE or DESTINATION screens are operating correctly, and the voice prompts are working correctly, because of what can be seen happening on the screen around the edges, in the area not covered by the error message. But the error message can't be eliminated, and since the majority of the screen can't be seen, the system is useless.

It seems that the nav unit has not reset properly since I played the music CDs on May 28th. Is it the nav unit itself? Is it the disc? Any way I can try another disc without buying one?

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thanks.

Tried Re-Programming

OK. In the absence of any advice and in desperation before throwing myself on the mercy of a dealer/service dept. , I decided to re-program the entire unit, as if I was using it for the first time.

I went completely through "set-up," then completely through "options," just as if I'd just taken the unit out of the box.

Strange to tell, it has now been working properly on the last two short trips into town and back -- about 7 miles each way. The CALCULATING screen doesn't freeze, and the ERROR MESSAGE does not appear. The voice prompts and map appear to be accurate, and react when appropriate. The entire screen can be viewed, and since the re-programming, no problems.

I just hope I don't have to do this every time I play a CD. However, it is still MUCH cheaper than either having the Nav Radio serviced or replacing it!
