WTB - Reese 20K 5th wheel hitch

Maiden voyage of the La Casa Del St.Laurent!

Ya wonder just who is towing in front of you... ... .
<marquee>Summer's "Cummin"</marquee>

Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high
desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, California, some folks,
new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard
they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 ft. Bayliner
to perform. It wouldn't get on a plane at all, and it was
very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much
power was applied. After about an hour of trying to make it
go, they putted to a nearby marine, thinking someone there
could tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check
revealed everything in perfect working condition. The engine
ran fine, the outdrive went up and down, the prop was the
correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in
the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water,
he was laughing so hard.
NOW REMEMBER THIS IS TRUE... . Under the boat, still
strapped securely in place
, was the trailer. #ad

AHhhh - another "urban legend" resurfaces! I laughed at that one too, about 10 years ago when *I* first heard it... #ad

BUT, anyone REALLY familiar with boats and boating will quickly recognize that these boats AREN'T "stuck" on the boats from underneath, or "glued" on, but ARE pretty much SITTING on the trailer, secured mostly at the top front of the boat, with perhaps more straps helping at the rear - but ALL ropes/straps CLEARLY visible from the TOPSIDE of the boat - and pretty hard to NOT see at least SOME portion of a trailer extending alongside and above the deck surface... Shucks, the boat FLOATS off the trailer, which is ATTACHED to the tow vehicle, which in a case like the above, would STILL be attached to the trailer too...

Makes a fun story tho'... #ad

I dunno, Gary. Some of the boats I've seen were really tied down in a lot of places. More likely they are just barely on there. I pulled out of Trinidad once and when I came around the corner there sat a nice glass cabin boat about 24 or so feet smack in the middle of the street. It was still attached to the trailer with the little winch line. I didn't stop. The owner had enuff help with all the people taking pictures. #ad

At least they remembered to unhook the truck, have to remember Lake Isabella is only two hours from the fruit and nut capitol of the western hemisphere, Los Angeles.

had more fun at the boat ramp watching a new houseboat get launched- one of my buddies yelled "check the plug" It was funny to watch them folks scurry like cocroaches only to relize houseboats ain't got no plugs #ad

Well, I have a real story. Fellow I go to church with and his brother bought identical new 24' cruiser boats with 454 Mercruiser's.

They had been out sitting around on the lake, listening to music, swimming, etc. They decided to head back and thought a good drag race would be fun.

Fellow's brother just ran off and left him while his boat was a groaning and acting very sluggish... . right before the anchor rope broke!!

I spend a bit of time on the water during the summer. And have seen two vehicles end up in the water. One was a chevy pickup that the parking gear paw didn't hold and as the guy was walking down dock you hear click click click clunk clunk as truck and trailer picked up speed and went in water. Oh he was mad.

Other time time guy let his girlfriend/wife/SO back new Explorer up to to load boat. She was having problems had jackknifed the trailer I don't know how many times. She got out of truck to look and guy in boat starts screaming I looked at him thinking give her a break geez. When I finally understood what he was yelling about. She left it in reverse when she got out trailer jacknifed real good just before I saw both go off the side of the boat ramp.

Now I am sure to keep driver in the vehicle at all times when loading or unloading boat.

Like the fella up above said - can't BEAT the entertainment you can get just sitting and watching at a boat ramp! #ad

Wish Even Beck would pipe in, he posted a picture of a Ram at a boat launch last year. The water was up to the bottom of the side windows, the entire bed was underwater.

What... . you mean that is not the proper way to launch a jet ski #ad

I Live In Bakersfield, And go to Lake Isabella often. What Burns Me, Its that in the Summer there are no Good Campsites available due to all the Morons from LA Driving up to Kern County to Campout. There so Many People from LA up there in Summer, That you cant drive down to a lot of the "out of the way" Place's along the Kern River Because they have their car/trucks parked along the 1 lane dirt roads. And Many of them Dont speak English. Its a Joke Here in bakersfield, And some locals make bets on How many Morons will die from Drowning in the Kern river every summer.

About the Boat Story, I am Suprised that the Trailer did'nt get hooked on a rock or a tree and sink the boat.
Right now, Lake Isabella is so low, That the Old Town of Wiskey Flats is exposed, I drove down to the Lake Bottom last week to look at the old Foundations and roads. Doug.

A friend of mine has a cabin on the far side of Kachemak Bay, Alaska with no road access. He wanted to store his 24 foot Olympic boat on the beach by his cabin - winch it up on the trailer. The problem was getting the trailer across the bay. He actually ferried the trailer across the bay strapped to the bottom of his boat.

Launching our 25 foot Ericson Sloop draws an audience. It has a fixed fin keel and draws 4 feet of water. We rig the mast, back the trailer down to the water, block it, unhook it, then pull the truck forward and hook up a couple pieces of steel between the truck and trailer that give us a 28 foot tongue extension. Pull the blocks, and very gently let gravity ease the rig down the ramp until the boat floats free. It works, but it's not for the faint of heart!

This story is for real. We were waiting to launch or boat at Lake Lavon along with some others. A rookie (it appeared) was trying to back his trailer down to load his boat. He finally got it in, but then his pickup began floating and ended up in the lake.

Another truck backed up, someone swam out with a tow rope, and pulled the pickup and trailer out of the water. In the mean time he called his wife to come out with the other car. She backed up, they hooked on the trailer, he then backed it down the ramp, but oops, he forgot to latch the hitch. The trailer came off and sunk. We finally backed up to the beach and launched from the beach while eveyone else stood around laughing.

My favorite is watching the guys trying to pull a 24 ft boat out of the water with a toyota pickup. I saw another guy pull his bass boat on the trailor, hook up the winch, then tell his budy to drive out. Only thing, the winch wasnt locked, so the trailor slid out from under the boat. About halfway up the ramp, you had a bass boat with the nose on the trailor, and the rear end on the ground. For the record, it took about 3 or 4 people to lift it back on, and everyone else within a mile radious to laugh.

I watched some guys with a 2 wheel drive Toyota tiring to pull a rather large boat out, it wasn't happening so they decided to lower the outdrive to have the boat help push. Worked great until the prop hit the concrete and tore all the blades off.

More stupid people-
I was watching a t. v. show and saw a European couple who had planned on going camping. The car had gear crammed inside and strapped on top. The footage showed the car burning and the police reported that the couple had run out of room and decided to put the rest of their gear under the hood. I am sometimes amazed at how dumb some people really are, as well as curious to know if there is any logical thought process what so ever in their head #ad

I had a freind who, after a hard day a boating in his jet boat, tried to load it up. He had his bud back the trailer down with his Blazer just right and he went to load. Well, seams like he had drank a few too many Silver Bullits and misjudged the speed of the boat. He crammed it in reverse only to hear his BB Cheby cough and die. Since jets don't steer or reverse without power... . he loaded the boat all the way up to the back seat of his Blazer!
