Ford Chip

From the Chevy Diesel Page.

Some of his cohorts tell him that his truck must be sick because their trucks would be much faster.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After reading posts on this and other sites about who's daddy can beat up who's, I decided to perform my very own unsientific test. I has assess to my Mother-in-Law's 1999 Dodge Turbo l Ton club cab 4X4 LWB 4:10 rearend with 14,873, and my 2002 2500HD Crew Cab SWB 4x4 with 2,752 miles. Both vehicles are bone stock.

Test conditions:

Temp:43F, Pavement, dry, Elevation 5,300 ft. Stopwatch: seiko.

Test l. Flat, level 0-60 Empty

Dodge 15. 70Sec. , Chev 13. 73 Sec.

Test 2 Approximately 6% grade with 21. 5 ft. Prowler 5th Wheel Time and speed between two points.

Dodge 54. 16 sec. Speed 60 MPH

Chev 52. 88 Sec. Speed 63 MPH

Test 3 Approximately 7% grade with 21. 5 ft. Prowler 5th Wheel Time and Speed between two points

Dodge 57. 61 Sec. Speed 57. 5 MPH

Chev 56. 49 Sec. Speed 60 MPH

I did not have a PSD available to test, but I'd bet there wouldn't have a lot of difference with it. If anyone has one available in the 4 corners area and would like to try this test, let me know.

I realize that this is not scientific, I'm not a good driver, etc. etc. but this is what I found. I posted this on the Ford page and whould have on the Dodge page, but it's just not important enough to spend the money. I'm Not seeing enough difference in the performance of these pickups for everyone to be making such a fuss. Mine sure wasn't the "Danny Dodge slayer" that it is made out to be, but it's equal in performance, and much quieter and more comfortable that the Dodge I used in this test.

I imagine the Dodge was considerably heavier than his truck. That, also, was a '99. Too bad he didn't have access to an HO.

real world test

Do that everyday for about 2 years and come back to post the data. I think you would see the reason for the fuss. Besides, weight and year of vehicle matter also.

Auto or Manual??

Unless I missed it, I did not see what transmission was in the Ram. As we all know, it makes quite a difference. I also did not see where he mentioned the axle ratio on the Chubby.

You mean that 300hp chevy out ran that 215hp dodge?

Go figure.

Try that with my HO when it was stock. . same truck better motor and transmission.

Now it wouldn,t be a contest.

I posted this once before but in light of this it is worth doing again. About three weeks ago while climbing a grade I came upon a Dura Max (2500) hauling a camper equal to mine. When he noticed me running up behind the race was on, if you can call two overloaded trucks climbing a grade a race. I was in the passing lane and after matching his speed I got on it and so did he. At the top I had a good lead and was still pulling away. I figure I must have been at least 1000 pounds more than he was.

Nothing too conclusive but it felt good after listening to a friend always telling me how great his DM is.

Wait until the 2003 ho comes out with a rating of 305 h. p. and lots more torque than the durapad. The reason I hammer the Chevy is they are so overrated, have you seen inside that engine compartment, wow I would hate to work on that thing. I have raced a few duras with my little 12v. I live in Arizona and aluminum head on a diesel in the extreme heat pulling heavy loads just doesn’t set right with me. If it was such a great idea don’t you think the tractor trailers would have on there rigs? Just my 2 cents:p

azgearpro:

From what I understand the 03 Ram will be the same as the DM in the rear, 3. 73 and 4. 10. I drive a Ram, the wife drives one, don't want anyother truck, but if I were to get another brand it would be the DM. For the ford, rear end problems. One of our forman was tow a trailer back from Fla. and lost the rear. Forgot! Make that two forman at different times. One had the "chip" in his and was amazed when he raced another CTD and it kept up with him till they reached 86 mph he said. I told him that was a 4. 10 and it was governed to stop fueling at that speed. All he said was "damn". There are other good trucks on the road but I drive the one I like. 233K and going for 500K

. . Preston. .

wooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Just to clear it up . You can only get the DURAMAX in a 373 no 410. I will tell you mine moves like there is no tomorrow no hype... ... ...
