My truck is a 95 and I was changing the oil in the diff. and had the cover back on and oil in when I looked over on the passenger side and noticed a little dampness aroud the axel housing not wet just mostly in the dust. What is involved in changing the axel seal special tools or what. do you torque the nuts back on install. Do I have to pull the diff. cover back off. I have changed my share on cars and half tons but not 2500,s or is it any thing to worry about. I am fixing to haul a camper about 13k miles and need to know. There is none on the brake shoes our in side the backing plate. I hate to lose the oil I just put in.

No special tools other than the large socket Its an 1 5/8 or something like that

From the factory manual

Tighten the adjustment nut to 120-140 ft lbs while rotating the wheel
Loosen the nut 1/8th of a turn to provide 0. 001 to 0. 010 inch wheel bearing end play

Napa has the thinwall socket, KB brand maybe, 2-9/16" You don't need to remove the cover. Coat the bearings with a little grease for start up or pump a small amount of oil in the hub well.

I can add this to the *you know your a cummins nut when* mine socket is sittin here on my computer desk, it is 2 9/16 Hex KDS2437 "KD brand" I did mine on the 2000 i had and my 92, nothing to it.

I would suggest checking the vent tube and making sure it is 100% clear. After that if it is then replace the seal. . If the tube is blocked then clear the blockage, rinse the wet area down with some brake cleaner and keep an eye on it to see if it comes back.

I had a 5 star tell me my vent tube was clear... the idiots checked the hose and not the fitting. I paid to have the emergency brakes and both axle seals replaced. 1 week later the seals and brakes were bad again. I checked the fitting for the vent line and it was plugged solid.

Boy... was I !@#$%^&*(!!!!!!!!!
