Anyone know of a vendor that that carries rear axle covers with a drain plug for the 03 trucks? I am not really interested in the looks, only the convenience of a drain plug. I know the MagHytec is a good cover but like I said, just a plain cover with a drain plug is all I am looking for. Thanks.

Gee Casey, what's wrong with the Mag Hytec? It sure would look good on the Batmobile. Just think your . ss could look as good as Dean's;)

Fireman

BTW to answer your question, no I don't. You may be able to fit a trans drain plug into your existing cover.

Fireman,

I agree that the Mag-Hytec look great. The problem is the Mag-Hytec also looks like a toy. You see what I consider an essential piece of equipment, my wife sees as a toy. My wife has threatened to make certain alterations to my person if I buy any more toys for my truck. There are some things I value above all else. Know what I mean?

Fireman and Casey,

If I installed a Mag-Hytec I would have to insure my butt with Lloyds of London:D :D :D. And I would be joining Casey and Woody in the choir :( :( .

the mrs., the old ball n chain....

i think it's cheaper to put toys on our trucks than it would be to keep up with all the make-up or shoe trends.

If i changed the rear diff cover on my truck, my wife would never know what to look for let alone know what a diff cover is. . somedays i think i could paint my truck another color and she would never know the difference.

sometimes that is a good thing, others it isn't.

women... u cant live with em, cant live without em.

good luck casey.

Plow.

Just braze a fitting with a plug on, then drill though the middle. (While its off. ) done it many times, works great.

Casey,

I'm in the same boat as you regarding more toys. What I'm thinkin' is a quick shot of black paint on the Mag Hytech before she sees it and I may just sneak under her radar screen

;)

That’s a good idea Dan. I was thinking about trying to drill a hole from the inside of the housing into one of the bottom (cover) bolt holes. Remove the cover bolt and the oil drains out, like the transmission covers.

Geno's sells a inexpensive drain plug kit for auto transmission pans that requires no welding. Don't see why it wouldn't work on a differential cover though it could be hard getting it all the way to the bottom.

I just used Gary-KJ6Q s suggestion and drilled and tapped a hole in the bottom of the cover and installed a 1/4" pipe plug. Just need a drill and bit and a 1/4" pipe tap. I installed a brass plug that uses an allen wrench to install. Works great.

What is the problem with pulling the cover? Takes just a few minutes and you are able to sweep your fingers across bottom of the housing and check for any metal shaving and get last bit of the old lube out.

I changed out the fluid in my truck today and I was surprised at the amount of shavings in the bottom of the housing. The lube was quite discolored but that was to be expected. The shavings, now thats a problem. Looks like the manufacturer is not doing a good job of cleaning out the housings before assembly.
