Air Conditioner Question

It seems I may have wiped out the carrier bearing in the rear end, has anyone had to replace the carrier bearing and do I need to setup the back lash again? I have about 2" of pinion twist before the truck moves. I had changed the gear lube last year and everything looked good.
Any ideas
Thanks
Kyle

The bearing caps came loose on my 06 ram 2500 and ended up chewing everything up. a complete replacement from Jasper was cheaper than repairing mine.

The bearings got rough in the 99 I had. I think the dealer got by with just replacing the bearings. I believe the failure was related to the shims coming out and being ground up and injested into the bearings. If you can get by with just the bearings everything wil have to be re-shimmed to get the backlash back where it is supposed to be. b g

If it has run for any length of time with a bad carrier bearing or a loose set on the carrier, you will need a ring and pinion. If you have that much play in the pinion, you need a gear set for sure.

The AAM doesn't have shims. And I don't think that the huge carrier bearings go bad. In my opinion these bearings are for lifetime - with good Oil and frequent change.

If you use the same shims on the new pinion bearings you should be close. It will still probably howl but it will work. The crush sleeve is a bugger to get the preload set. Need a holding tool and good leverage.

The OE carrier bearings are crap, they will fail with no sign of issues. Geting the carrier set is tricky if you do get things aligned correctly the adjusters are finicky about how they are set and moved.
