I need badly to change the seal on my #80 rear axle pinion shaft. does any one know what size the nut is that holds the pinion in place? It looks like im gonna need a steel hub- type socket for its thinner walls, which i will need to purchase or borrow. If some one can give me some insite it would save me from removing the drive shaft and crawling around only to find i have the wrong size or the forged socket wont fit into the yoke... .

Thanks for any help.

I don't remember the nut size but tq is 480 - 500 according to a Dana rep I just talked to. If you don't have a 500 lb wrench, tq it to 250 plus 3/8" measured at one of the nut corners. Craig

Thanks alot guys. I do apreciate the help, but i already know the info that you've offerd me. By trade im a mechanic, and i have acess to all those handy tools that ill need, except a socket that will fit in the hole and on the nut at the same time.

PCrable... . that was an interesting post-- dad's LSD lost pass. side seals twice ( mind you it was on two different axles ). So far never lost a left side, his ride is at 199,550 as i speak. This time next week she'll be sportin' the big 200K across the odometer.

Ive called my Columbus OH dealer several times only to put on hold ( 16 min. on the cell phone bill-- with one call-- and still no damned answer!!)

Maybey ill try the small town dealer near me, but i find that im a better tech blind folded than the guy who did my warranty work last summer...

All I need is the socket size and type-- i assume its special-- so i dont go gettin the wrong tool. I just dont want to take the drive shaft out for a guess and check session, especially cause this truck is my only ride and a wrong guess would mean re-assembly and a trip bak into town... ... ... .

wish me luck and keep that hammer down;)
