Rear Axle Question

I was curious about the ratings of the rear axles in some of the 250 and 350 trucks you guys have. I just got done putting new wheel bearings, etc. in my '90 truck. While I was tracking some of the parts down, NAPA kept telling me the inner and outer bearings were the same. Mine weren't. When I went to get the new wheel studs, they asked if it was a 5500 lbs. or 6200 lbs. axle. Since I thought the 6200 was 350 only, I double checked the door jamb on my dad's '92 D250 i was driving and it said 5500, so I went with it for my '90 W250. Well they didn't fit. Neither did the seals I bought. So I had them look up the ones for a W350. They did fit. Then I checked the jamb on mine and it is listed as 6085, but with a total rating of 8510 on the truck. So is this a 1 ton axle and why would the put in 1 ton axle and keep the 3/4 ton rating? I was just wondering what you guys have. Mine is a W250 5-speed, dad's is a '92 D250 5-speed.

Hmmm. seems 3/4ton trucks were a bit more complex than their 1 ton cousins. My recomendation would be to take the old parts in with you if possible. Another option is to buy all available, make a note of what fit (for future reference), and take back what you didnt need. It's a hassle, but everything has its drawbacks.

They all are pretty much the same rear end, D or W, 250 or 350. The D250 rear uses the same drums and such as the W250 even though weight ratings are different. Frame size and springs are the difference.



The only ones I have seen different are the 89's that have a lighter rear in the D's.

I ran into problems w/ a NAPA parts order for my 92. I got it all figgured out now with a long list of part numbers. You simply HAVE to use the old parts to obtain new as the NAPA listing for the rear studs/front and rear wheel seals etc. etc. are all wrong.



Example; take in a wheel stud to SHOW them (or measure them yourself). Don't expect to order a box full of them and come to find they are the wrong size.



Autozone parts are the same. You cannot order brake pads with out showing the old ones. It's show and tell... ... ... ... . mostly show.

I've found if the parts stores have a listing for a D or W350 single rear wheel, its what fits the 250's.
