My question is a simple one I think  I have a 2001 2500 with the hight output turbo diesel 6 speed trans. What rear axle does this truck have under it ? I know it is a posi-trac but I'm talking about the D/C model. You know 248, 261 0r something else. Why isn't this information on some kind of tag up top, like under the hood or one the side of the door pillar? I'm not for sure the tag on the rear end even says which one it is. All I know is that it has a tag on it. :D

What you have is a Dana model 80. It's actually a hybrid - model 80 center section/gear with model 70 axle shafts/tubes. This is standard on all 2500 manual transmissions and all 3500's. I think this is what you're looking for. It's available with 3. 55 and 4. 10 ratios. Early 2001 have drum brakes, later ones have discs.

I crawled under mine when it was newer. All the info that you are asking about was stamped on the ring/pinion cover. I too have a 2001. I have the standard output version with a Dana 80 using 3. 54 gears. By the way, watch the pinion seal for leaking. I just had mine replaced under warr. at just 15,000 miles. Only leaked when I was carrying a load. It was leaking at around 11,000 miles but I wiped up the mess and then took it to the dealer. I should have taken it to the dealer and then wiped up the mess. Had gear oil all over the axle housing and even the rear of the fuel tank.
