I am hoping to replace the rear axle seals, and the pinion seal this weekend. My problem is I'm not sure which axle I have, to order the seals. I haven't been able to find any info in the shop manual on decifering the codes on the tag. If anyone can help me decifer the tag codes, I'd appreciate it. My truck is a 97 2500HD 4x4 Club CAb Laramie SLT w/ 5. 9 cummins and 5 Spd. The best I can see, here are the #s on the tag:

52069477 AC LS

3 54 606056 2

There's also some #s on the cover, which leads me to think it's a Dana axle:

Dana 4234

R A B

0937

03 02 94

If anyone can help decifer that, so I can get the parts at the local parts store, I'd really appreciate it. One more question, Has anyone found the bearings to be bad, or is it just a problem with the stock seals?? Thanks, Ron...

I say you have a Dana 70.

From what I understand our trucks have a hybrid rear end. A mix of the Dana 80 and 70. I was never sure what parts we shared with the Dana 80 but was told when I was looking into lockers to go with the Dana 70 applications.

Group,

I tried to use the url that Paychk listed above to look up BOM 611186-1 (front diff). The site did not find a match for that number. Does anybody else have another web site that might be able to resolve the number?

Also, I do not have a tag on my rear diff. (2001. 5 3500 1 ton w/3. 54 - disks on rear). Has anybody else with this vintage truck looked to see if they have a tag? If you do could you post the number?

ihegdal - I have same situation. I have looked twice and not found the tag that was supposed to be there.

I bought my truck used with 12K miles, and so don't have sticker from new. Went to local dealer parts department. They looked up the VIN and printed out a component list that shows rear axle is code DRLP, and description is Dana M80. I was there buying lube to change fluid out in both differentials, transmission and transfer case. Truck has 24K and I want to get the fluid changed as Preventative Maint. No problems, other than stiff shifting from 2 to 3 sometimes.

All 1 tons have the Dana 80. It is different from the 80 in the 3/4 tons because of changes made to fit the dual wheels.

All '94-'02 diesels have a Dana 60 front axle.

I called the dealer today to check on the seals. He told me it is a Dana M60 in the front, and a Dana M80 in the rear. Rear pinion seal # is 4773237. Rear axle seal # is 5003464. Rear axle paper gasket # is 4384186. The 97 service manual calls the rear axle a 9 1/4 rear axle. Says nothing about Dana 70 or 80. It also lists the RBI 248, and 267. Also the # in the book for the front axle is FBI 216, or 248. I'm confused How does that cross over to the Dana #s? While doing a search on the web, one of my results was to try the TDR issue 18, page 6C I think. I was not a member back then, does anyone have that issue? It's supposed to have part # cross reference or something like that. If anyone has that, could it be scanned and copied on here for us to see? Thanks, Ron

The 248 and 267 are the ring gear measurements in mm. The

D60 is a 9 3/4 " ring gear 248 x . 03937=9. 76376"

D70 is a 10 1/2" ring gear 267x . 03937=10. 51179"

2nd gens: 2500 auto 4x4 front D60 rear D70

2500 man 4x4 front D60 rear D80 hybrid

3500 all 4x4 front D60 rear D80 hybrid

The D80 hybrid uses the center section from a D80 and

everything outboard is D70 stuff.

Thanks, Speedo. The dealer told me my rear axle is a Dana M80. Probably same as D80. However, what does Dodge call it? The shop manual doesn't have a d, or m 80. Torque specs are different for the axles listed. Still somewhat confused.

Thanks, Ron

Rear axle

The rear axle is a Dana 80 hybrid referred to as a 286 RBI axle.

The pinion torque is shown as 597-678 Nm (440-500 ft. lbs. )
