Anyone swapped a 2001 dana 70 rearend into a 99 with a dana 70. Any lessons learned ? I am looking to go to rear discs instead of drums. It is an axle swap or buying the EGR kit. Any lessons learned would be appreciated.

I put an 01 dana 80 w/ drum brakes in my 99 which had a dana 70 w/ drum brakes---parking brake only prob--had to get creative with the hookup along the frame--so grab everything you can for the emergency brake---chris

I put a 2002 Dana 80 disc in my 94 that had a Dana 70.

A D70 to D70 swap should be no problem.

However, the 01 D70 is 7/8" wider per side.

It will move your wheel out that distance.

The 01 & 02 models had wheels with a deeper backspace to compensate for this.

You plug for the speed sensor may be different.

Mine was, but not sure about a 99.

If it is, you could just use the one from your 99.

I also had to get a different length e-brake cable.

This is between the one from the cab, and the rear frame mount.

$20 item at dealer. You may not need this.

Since it's a D70/D70 swap, driveshaft will be OK.

I had to shorten mine 1 1/4" going from a D70 to the D80.

Brakes.

I changed my master cylinder & proportioning valve to the 02 model.

Don't know if your disc/drum will work or not.

I didn't even try as mine needed replaced anyways.

You will definitely like the improved braking.

Good Luck, Brad

Just did one in my 99 and there were no problems! I got a complete rear, with the parking brake cables, off a long bed QC truck. I bolted it into my shortbed 99 QC and everything fit as expected. I did have to reflare the brake lines into the junction box on the axle housing, because I used the brake hose and junction block for the 99, and the 2001. 5 hard lines have bigger fittings. This wasn't a problem because I expected it, and . 90 cents worth of brake fittings and my double-flaring kit took care of it quickly.

The brake cables went right back on like the 99's, although they had less play in them, so I had to loosen the brake cable adjuster to get both cables connected.

Once I got the brake lines connected I opened the farthest bleeder screw and let the brakes gravity bleed while I messed with brake cables and such. Went over without a hitch.

Easiest rear swap/conversion I ever did. I'm looking for one for my 96 now.

Chris

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up getting a Dana 80 rearend so hopefully mine will go as smooth as yours did.
