just wonderng if any body has the parts break down on the dana 70???

found out the my rear axle seal up near the brake backing plate is leaking ...

has anyone done this seal change ? and how do you go about doing something like that ... . and would i need to take the rear diff cover off and release the clips or does it have any ????

No Clips

You better get a manual like Clymer or Haynes or even the one from Dodge.

You will need to remove the axles and the brake drums.

Be sure to use new nuts on the spindle or really good locktight.

No c-clips no need to remove the diff cover.

Unless it's been awhile since you changed the fliud...

When mine started leaking I bought the kit from Quad 4x4. It came with all the parts, instructions (video and text), and any unusual tools needed.

A couple of things to keep in mind. First, the seal could be leaking because the bearings have worn and the play has wallowed out the time-hardened seal. So replacing the bearings while you're in that far isn't a bad idea.

Second, check your axle breather tube. If that gets plugged, the seals are the next weakest point in the axle, so they'll rupture when the fluid is pushed out when the axle heats up.

no clips inside. lmills and i just did both of mine the other day. very easy to do. take wheel off, remove the bolts on the end of the hub/axle (i think there is 8) slide the axle out, then u need the 2 5/8 axle nut socket, remove the axle nut (there is a little hold clip that needs to be removed first) the the hub will slide right off. pry the old seal out and press the new on in and reverse order for reinstall. i dont remember torque on the axle/hub nut but dont get it do tight. the bearings come off with the hub. got my seals from napa, 12. 99 a peice.

If my memory serves me right the nut tq is 120 - 140 then back off 1/8 th turn. Oh for the buck or so get new nut clip thingy majiggies. Take old ones with you to match up. A little trick I learned to keep oil from leaking at the seal's steel outer ring to tube surface - smear an even thin coat of blue goo on the inside tube to outer seal area before you install and then after its home take your finger and smooth off any that squeezes out.
