My dad & I have '96 & '00 2500 4wd trucks. I've never had the rear drums off either truck. Do the drums come off both or either truck without pulling the axle shaft?

Yes they do. If you have trouble getting them off there is a little trick. Put the rear axle up on stands. Remove the wheels. There may be some factory installation clips on the lug studs. Throw them away. Remove all but a couple of the lug nuts. Leave those loose. Start the truck. Put it in reverse then hit the brakes. Do the same thing in a forward gear. The loose lug nuts are necessary so you don't have to chase the drum when it comes loose.

My rear drums just took a little more than this. I tried just hitting the breaks and that did not work. So instead, I used the motor to break them loose by holding the brakes and brake torqueing instead. They snapped loose very fast. Mine is an auto, but with fancy footwork you can do it with a manual as well.

Thanks for the tip Joe. The drums on my pops trucks were stuck on. I thought we'd have a heck of a time getting them off. It ended up being no problem.
