I have been searching the archives for more on rear brake shudder. Does anyone know of a recall or TSB on this subject?
A while ago several people reported this problem but have not posted the cure.
A local parts supplier thinks a class action lawsuit is in the works.
Dodge has really dropped the ball on this.

I wish there was a TSB on this. My 99' has suffered from this shutter since it had 500 miles on it. Only happens when braking in the 20-30 mph range. Some days it is worse than others. Dodge replaced my drums and shoes which worked 90% but for only a while.
It is not as bad as it had been so I live with it. Good luck

Adiabatic,
Please explain what you mean by brake shudder?
I am experiencing something which I find abnormal. When I step on the brakes, sometimes it feels as if part of the braking system shuts off, kind of like the ABS activates. I have four wheel ABS and I know for sure that I a not locking up any wheel. I literally feels as if a switch is activated to do this. I have a previous post post on this with brakes in subject. No idea what can be causing this, but it is scary at times , especially when I have to step on the binders a littel harder.
Do you know of any source of info for the class action suit you mentioned?

adiabatic, I had the same thing with my truck. When braking in the 20 mph - 30 mph range, the rear of the truck would hop. Last time I did brakes, I pulled the drums and had them turned. Replaced rear brake linings with Raybestos Super Stop severe duty linings and front brake pads as well. The drums were slightly warped. Find a good auto parts store to turn your drums. Once I had them cut they've been good since. No more hop. Time will tell. I'm sure down the road they will probably warp again. Thinking about upgrading to 3500 rear wheel cylinders. Good luck, -Glen

I found some of my rear end hop was the OEM Badyear equimpent. the new Coopers don't do it as bad. I also know I have warped drums. I plan on fixing it this summer when I install the 3500 wheel cylenders.

kraut67m, what I mean by shudder is that the truck shakes under braking mostly in the rear. Sometimes it shakes so hard that everything loose rattles in the cab. Usually it occurs when braking normally from 35 mph down to 25 mph.
Dodge clearly has a problem that is widespread. The rumour is that they have a mixture of good and bad brake drums in their system. It would cost them a fortune to do the right thing, ie swap all bad drums for known good ones.

I just got done re-installing the brake drums after having NAPA turn them.
Results: no more shudder (so far).
Cost: $35 plus my labor. .

I had a rear brake shudder at 56,000. It would hopas I slowed down from 30 mph to near 0 mph. I pulled the rear drums and found both rear seals had leaked a minute amount of grease some time from "o" miles and now. Very little leaked and they are not leaking now. The gear oil was on the drum in a sticky type compound. I cleaned the drums and shoes with brake cleaner, scuffed the shoes and the problem is gone.
