I decided it was time to do a thorough brake check at almost 90K. I talked to Sam Peterson and ordered front pads etc. which will be here next week.
I wanted to get started so I pulled the rear drums and found the linings to be hardly worn at all but the rear shoes had a lot of little hairline cracks, which Sam had told me to look for. He also told me the part numbers for shoes and wheel cylinders. #451 shoes and F79767 cylinders. He also said that it was not a sure thing that I had that larger cylinders on my 98 as I had assumed. Sure enough, the new cylinders were much larger. Looking at the outside boot it was about 1/4" bigger diameter. The improvement is very noticeable. I got the shoes for (about $20) and cylinders ( $12. 50 each) at ORileys.
Hope this helps if you are checking your brakes.
