Well My rear brakes have been acting funny here lately.

When I dynoed at Tulsa I noticed that while on the rollers and the dynos brakes were off, after I done a pull I could not stop my rear tires untill I took it out of gear. Then they would stop but it took alot more effort than I thought it should.

I finely jacked my rear up and run it to like 25 mph then hit the brakes, they kept turning untill I really pressed on the petal.

Every once in a while after driving for a while, then when I hit the brakes it feels like a serious fibration comming from the rear. But then it won't do it all of the time.

The performance of the brakes seem to be interminent, I can stop good one time then the next time I have a pucker factor to get stopped.

I really have not had time to investigate this yet but just wanted somethings to check.

TIA

things to check

I would check for any lining or how much left and also look for rear end lube in drums could cause grabbing untill burnted off or it is as simple as a brake adjustment. I adjust my brakes every 5k at oil changes just a couple of clicks to keep them extra tight.

Good luck hope it is miner

Brakes are adjusted, just did that last week. I haven't had time to pull the drum off and check for oil yet, maybe I will have time today.

Thanks

Could be a stuck adjuster not allowing shoe to move outward. Shoe flex can happen and it will creep up on you over time until it becomes really noticable one day (usually at an inopportune moment).

Since the brakes are adjusted it could be the wear pattern on the shoe is bad enough on one half of each shoe that the shoe must flex to make contact across the whole lining area.

I ran across a stuck adjuster one time on an 82 D350 that had wore down the top half of both shoes on one side to the point that the other side would lock up and the stuck side wouldn't. Shoe was worn almost to the backing plate at top and had almost no wear on the bottom of shoe. This was an ex-state truck that was used around an experimental crop station - I reckon they never noticed it and auctioned it "as is".

Once you dive into it the problem should be obvious.

Checked the brakes for wear and oil, I found everything to be normal. I cleaned everything with breakKleen and put it back together. They still suck.

I did notice that when I was just setting with the truck running if I kept hard pressure on the pedal it would slowly go almost all the way to the floor then stop. I'm leaning tward a master cylinder now.

Could there be a problem with the RWAL system dumping my pressure to the rear wheels?

friggin rear end

Well after 80k with no resolution in sight I finally pulled the fuse to the abs. I have an idiot light on my dash now but that friggin truck has never stopped so good in its life. The difference is night and day. I have never been a fan of abs anyways so i feel its a good solution. No computer in the world is as good as me at stopping in extreme circumstances.
