In the 1. 5 yrs I've had my 05 3500 QC 4x4 (at 95k miles) I've replaced the front rotors once and the rears 4 times now! I make my living with my truck, I spend 80% + on gravel roads or what the hwy department calls gravel... its mostly clay with course sand, when it rains the stuff is like wet cement! Anyways the rears pack up with this clay/sand mixture and can take out the pads very qucikly as well as the rotors. I'm seeing the stuff pack up between the inside of the rotor and the "shield", I do have access to a pressure washer and usually at the end of the day I get under the truck and give it a good washing, but by then the damage has been done or is at least the start of things to come. Question for those in the know... . would it be wise/beneficial to remove that "shield" as the outside of the rotor doesn't have a shield and the rotor condition is always the inside is badly scared, gouged or scored, where as the outside is always in good shape. Any suggestions?

If there was any call for a "rotor man" for a pit crew sign me up I change out rotors faster then a woman can change her mind... . :-laf

Sounds like you already have it figured out. I have the same situation but not as extreme as you, the insides of my stock rear rotors are pretty grooved up (60k original pads) but the outsides are perfect. I run a lot of gravel roads as well. Seems like it would be beneficial for you and cleaning could be a lot easier at the end of the day too.
