2000 24v T. D. 4+4, Quad Cab 3. 55:1 rear drum brakes.

I am having problems with ABS & Brake light coming on and also rear brakes activating on/off while in motion. I removed the rears last night, had to replace the shoes, the left rear was down to the rivets. I also installed new front pads.

The ABS light came on three days ago, noticed the brakes activating on the way home from work.

I searched the the history and have 2 pages of notes, all refere to rear diff sensor.

Park brake - o. k.

Fuses - O. K.

Connections - O. K.

Fluid - O. K.

Cycled key switch and display shows P Done, no codes display, even the familiar P1693(???)

I have the rear diff sensor in hand, it measures 1. 830 ohms.

Any suggestions?? On all the searches, no one said that the rear brakes were on/off as mine.

Hope someone is out there,

TX, Scott

How many miles are on your truck? I'm curious to know whether mileage or ABS malfunction has worn out the pads. I'm sorry, but I can't offer any advice on your problem. Good luck.

It has 88K miles, no problems w/ brakes until now. I have removed the rears and blew out dust/adjusted a few times. This was because of of squeaking in brakes. I use my P brake often and keep the cables lubed where possible to keep them fron hanging up.

The day the ABS light came on:

I pulled out backwards from my shop driveway, and slightly spun rear tires in forward (snow/ice). I stopped and retrieved the daily paper from the house diveway(approx 100 ft), and the lights were on when I got back in the cockpit.

If you have four wheel ABS, spinning your rear wheels without the front ones turning may turn on the ABS light. I put my trucks rear end (with 4 wheel ABS) on jack stands so I could spin the driveline with the engine while I was trouble shooting the u joints.

This caused the ABS light to go on. I shut the truck off, set it back on the ground and drove it and the light stayed off. I've never had trouble with the rear brakes going on by them self though... .

Scott saw your reply on my problem issue. There have been a couple of other post since then that might help you and which I believe solved my problem. I had also forgot to post that on my issue I have the codes P 0500 and P 1693 set. The P 0500 being the VSS sensor failure and the P 1693 being an accompanying code. Hope this helps. Several TDR members have sure helped me and its appreciated.

By the way I have 125K on my rear brakes (Original Factory) and though they need replacing they are not down to doing damage. I will be changing them on Monday also. Over half of these miles have been hauling also. Front brakes were replaced at 82K.

Did you have the drums machined? The only reason I can think of for the rear brakes activaiting by themselfs is out of round drums and or the brakes being overadjusted.

I have not had the drums machined. The only problem has been the left(driver side) rear. The brakes will activate intermit while moving and flashing on/off ABS/Brake lights. It has a very noticable jerk and it is not consistant(every rev. of wheel).

The other side shoes are in good shape, they have 50% + life on them.

I will be calling the 1-800 # (from TDR mag) for a copy of service manual. I will continue picking at it. I will be calling @ to look for a diff. sensor.

Thanks for you inputs.

Scott
