Archived rear differential leaking

A week or so ago was checking all fluid levels and when I pulled the plug on rear diff cover and foam came out. Put back plug meaning to change fluid later but had to drive 100 miles. Now seal is leaking. Anybody have this happen? Solution?

Happened on my 98. It was overfilled from the factory (according to the dealer). They let some out and replaced the seal. The mechanic said they will leak if overfilled but he went ahead and replaced the seal, anyway. Mine was dripping when I noticed it. Slow drip. After the seal replacement, I had no more problems.
