Ok Guys,

Just sat down to really study the manual in anticipation of starting the install of the TSM disc brakes on my '92 W250. Looking at the service manual, it states that after removing the axel shaft flange lock nuts, I should strike the shaft end to loosen the tapered dowels. After looking at all the pictures, I am unable to locate the noted tapered dowels. Page 3-55 discusses the power-lok differential, but no reference to the dowels is made. Any body done this job before??? All help appreciated.
 
The taperd dowels they are referring to, are at the end of the shaft nearest the punkin. Also known as tapered spines. The dowels or spines are known to seise tight and even needing a big slide hammer to pull. But only in extreme cases.



Don't worry, it a easy job. Just make sure you have the large socket,new gaskets and seals, new bearings and a torque wrench.

Thanks Mark for the quick reply. I just checked the manual and given that I have a power-lok differential am I going to have to disassemble the case halfs to get to the pins?
 
If you are just pulling the shafts to do brakes, why are you pulling apart the case. No need unless you have a problem with rear end clutch pack or gears?

The tapered dowels were used on earlier model Full Floating Axles.



You can tell when they are used by the fact that there are studs with nuts holding the the axle to the hub rather than bolts.



The dowels are coned shaped on their OD and fit over the stud. When the nut is tightened it wedges the cone shaped dowel between the hole in the axle flange and the stud. They are routinely used on heavy duty trucks. Because of the wedging action they are very tight in the studs and in the axle flange holes. Hitting the axle flange end momentarily casues the clamping force they exert to be relaxed when the axle shaft very slightly moves inward due to the striking force of the hammer; the axle then will "pop off" the studs.



Your '92 has bolts and not dowels. The Dodge Service Manual has incorrect text on the removal procedure. Dodge evidently overlooked updating the procedure when the switch to bolts was made. The bolts have shoulders that are close fitting to the axle flange holes eliminating the need for the dowels. See the diagram on page 3-30 in your manual. According to my '93 manual, the drawing first appeared in the '92 manual so it may be that '91 and earlier models still used the dowels. Remove the bolts and the axle will very easily slide out by hand.
 
rear disks

Can someone give me some input on the rear disk brakes? I converted to the 1 ton shoes/cylinders a few years back, but I think disks on the back would be better
