Well it stopped raining for a while today i was able to get started on my EGR rear disk conversion, everything came apart real easy and all the EGR parts fit well, the only problem i ran into was the banjo bolt on the brake line where it connects to the caliper hit the inner bracket and i had to grind a little notch for it to clear, this would not be a problem on truck that only require one spacer between brackets, i was about 30 min from finishing mounting all the new parts and i had a run in with a cut off wheel on a die grinder (i was notching the second bracket) and cut a vessel, nerve and tendon on my ring finger, so off to the emergency room i went, a bunch of scrubbing and 4 stitches later i'm back home and should be able to finish tomorrow if the weather holds(raining again now) all in all an fairly easy conversion, i think the worst part will be changing0 all the other brake lines (front and back) to the new EGR lines,

Here is a link to some pics of todays work

Excellent pictorial,,, looks like a sweet install. Let us know how they work. What about the ABS system, do you continue to use it with this kit??

The install was actually pretty easy, i was in a hurry to be the rain and got a little careless when grinding the last side,

I was hoping to not have to do any modifications , but on these truck you never know what to expect, they all seem to be a little different, all in all i think the kit as a whole fit really well, i'm happy so far

Tight work Rick!

I was wondering if us dually people might have a chance at this great technology, or if it is just for you single wheeled guys :D?

Also, what are the calipers off of? If you can't tell, I understand. Hope your hand is better!

Russell

The ABS should still work because the speed sensor is on the nose of the diff. The system doesn't car what brake is at the end of the axle.

R. E. Miller,

I think the calipers are for 79-85 El-Dorado, Riviera, and Toronado and 80-85 Sevilles.

i haven't slid a tire and wheel on yet to see how much clearance there would be for a dually, but from what i've heard they won't fit, it works n the front and ford does it on the rear of there new trucks so it must be possible, nobody's probably put the time into it yet.

I figured no sense changing a clean bandage so I did get the other side finished today, and got the E brake cables hooked up, if i can get the line set done tomorrow i'll be good to go.

How do they work?

Hey Rick,

Have you had a chance to go for a road test yet? I am awaiting mine. I like the idea for the e-brake. Makes more sense than the tubes. Anything I ought to watch for besides the bajo fitting on the caliper. I have the 4" grinder ready to modify the bracket. Thanks for all of the pictures.

the braided lines should be a great assist in stopping power. . they don't bulge and take a heavy foot stop much better

Nice job on the install ['cept the finger ]

Jeremy

when i finished grinding the second side i removed the bracket and clamped it in a vise, easier and safer on the digits, as for the the rest of the installation it was pretty much bolt on, i had some lines i could'nt get loose but i just made the new lines no problem

I'm working on bleeding the system now, i pumped 2 quarts thru the system and still had a mushy peddle, i think now i've got a bad master cylinder, if i take the cap off and push the brake pedal down i get a little fountain from the forward most reservoir so i think it bleeding thru again, picked a new NAPA one today going out now to put it on and see what happens, hopfully i'll get to drive it tonight,

i'll let you know how it does.

bleeding

Rick,

Due to the orientation of the bleeder screws on the rear calipers(pointing down) you may have to remove the calipers from the mounts to get them to bleed properly. Take them out of the mounts and stick a scrap of wood or something in between the brake pads. Then set them on the leaf spring with the bleeder pointing straight up. This should allow the rest of the air to be released from the system when bleeding.

Paul

rear brakes w250

hi while taking brakes apart on my 250(1990) my mechanic and i noticed that the drums we ordered did not fit. upon disassembly i discovered i had 35spline axles and 1 ton drums. i am under the impression that i have a 1 ton rear in a 3/4 ton truck. i was told 3/4 trucks had 31 spline axles and these are def are not 3/4 ton drums. the truck was purchased as 3/4 ton. do u think its possible i have 1 ton 350 truck. i was told they originally made a few 350 single tire pickups. price for drums were outrageous. any suggestions? please not a dealer have ytou heard of this before? my email is -- email address removed -- just in case cause it took me a while to get on here. thanks pete

my truck is a 1990 w250 gear vendors banks intercooler bd exhaust brakes 4500 trans over 300,000 miles on it and only 2 sets of brakes original owner

1 ton single wheel

I had a 91 1-ton single wheel. The brake drums are 3" and can be bought at NAPA. I'll have to look up the #'s if you need them.

Excellent thread Rick! Thanks for taking the time to post it for us.

Did you get a firm peddle after the master cylinder replacement?

I have converted to the 3" drums on my 3/4 ton but will go this route when the drums are shot.

Cost?

Stab,

I went thru 2 master cylinders but finally found one the worked, i've driven the truck about 75 miles with the new brakes so far and they get better with each stop, i really had to burn them in good at first i talkin smokey burn in, but know i can actually feel the truck trying to stop from the rear first, i never had that even with the 3" shoes and big slaves, i think it was worth the effert.

i'll give them a good test the end of the month i'm heading out west for a couple of weeks for some 4 wheelin and camping i usually do about 6500 miles in two weeks so we'll se how they do on a long haul,

i'm tempted to install a new booster before i leave i think i've got a small leak starting but it's hard to tell.
