I took my 2000 dually to Wal Mart yesterday for new tires for the rear. They called later and said they could remove the wheels from the axle. I told them to park it and I would come get it. Personally I have never had the rear wheels off for anything except for a tire change in August of 2003. Is there a special trick to get the wheels off? Shouldn't the lug nuts come off and the wheel should pull off right? Any help is appreciated.
 
There was probably a build up of rust. The center of the rims fit pretty snug.

It can take a little persuasion. After you get them off, wire brush all of the rust off. Rim centers too. Put a little anti-seize on. Might as well put a little on the studs while you're at it. A drop of oil between the surfaces of your two piece lug nuts, and torque to 140 ft. lbs.

Had a flat on my Ford dually, rear inside tire three years ago. No way I could get it off. Put it all back together, drove to a Goodyear place, they could not get it off. Had to go back the next day when their ace guy was there and he used a huge bar to bust it loose. The good news was I could operate with the one good tire on the rear. However, I now drive a SRW Dodge 3500 and like it a lot better.
 
Getting them off.

The same thing happened to our truck and our Dodge dealer had a creative mechanic who solved the problem. When asked how he persuaded the wheels to come free of the axle, he calmly said that he reapplied the lug nuts, but didn't fully tighten them. He then drove the vehicle around the parking lots doing a few tight turns and the lateral forces were enough to break the bond.

If you have aluminum wheels, put Pepsi in a squirt bottle. Put it on the wheel, in between the where the wheels meet each other, around the wheel studs (jacked up, nuts off). Wait a few minutes, and a couple whacks of the hammer should pop them loose.



That trick works great! :) The acid in the pop softens the residue from the electralysis.



Had to do that remove a alum. Budd wheels off a semi. Wouldn't move without it.
 
Put two lug nuts back on the wheel leaving them loose and back it up and they will snap loose. Don't let them use the maul. Simple rust. To correct this from happening again, use antisieze on the studs and the axle housing.
