Ok here goes, I have a 3. 54 rear end and run 315 75 16 tires. Been this way for long time, always heard rear end will go. Tonight on way home from womans house ( 10 minutes drive) it started clunking at take off. At least I think it is the rear end, started it half way through after I had to stop at stop sign. What is a good replacement or how much does it cost at the stealer? I do have LSD too. Should I just buy a new locker to put in it and set it up at 4. 10 which I would hate or stay with stock. Or do I buy a locker from somewhere and put that in at 3. 54? All help would be appreciated. Will it freeze up on me? I have to take it to the dealer for body-paint work ( stupid flares) and that is a 10 minute drive again. It goes in Monday morn for a week and could have rearend put in while it was there if it will make it that far.

The only question I can answer her is the 4:10 Vs. 3:54. I see you have a 4X4, and you would have to change BOTH pumpkins if you decide to make a switch. The Dealer will be a very expensive way to go if you are not under some kind of warranty for just a normal replacement.

Ok well that answers that about keeping 3. 54s. how expensive is the dealer on something like that? Or how much are the parts or a good locker? I know a great mechanic that could replace and and set them up... . I think its the rear end for all I know it may be the transfer case... . gonna go mess with it and try to find out for sure.

Gearing Costs

Jeremy,

When I was thinking about switching to 4. 10's on my '00 V10, the dealer (I mean stealer) I talked to wanted $1,200 just for labor. I did, however, find rear end shops that said they would do the whole job, parts and labor, for anywhere from $1000 to $1300. That's the one downside to having a 4X4, gotta multiply these things by 2. So instead I traded the V10 for a Cummins. :D

Only when I turn

I did some driving and it only pops/locks when I turn. This next weekedn I am going to tear it apart an am wondering if I am able to just replace the bad clutch pack. My dad says hes done a few and that was the case. If so, am I able to buy parts for this like at Napa? But driving straight it is fine. I use Amsoil 75-90, and always do the figure eights after the fluid change, I haven't had any problems until now and its been about 7000 miles since I last changed, would adding friction modifier possibly be a fix or at least worth a shot? If I do have to get a whole new rear-end, does detroit make one for it? I haven't been able to find a site for any rear stuff. I do have the Dana 70 with 3. 54. Thanks again, you guys are what make this site great.

Thats what I was kinda wondering but I am almost certain that is goes farther than that. I am going to try it first before a big tear down but I honestly think it will cure it.

My experience with 2 Dodge pickups with LSD has been to keep

adding Mopar friction modifier until it smooths out. $10 a bottle

seems kind of steep until you experience the alternatives.

I've got 6 bottles in a fresh rebuild in my 93.

Jereme, I agree with Mel! I dontthink your rear end is bad. i looks loke from you sig. that you have a Dana 80? I have not heard to may stories of them going out. i think I would try the LSD modifier for sure. I have changed my oil 4 times in the rear dif. used amsoil 75-90 series 2000 with modifier in it and have never had to add any. As far as lockers go I have no expeirence with Dodge trucks but have had several Jeeps that I locked with various lockers. The only one i would use is ARB. the others i have had didnt last and made the car drive terrible in the snow( it went straght when you wanted to turn) Good Luck, Just try the LSD modifier. Dave:p

No I have the Dana 70, my truck used to be an automatic. I've done enough burnouts that this was expected and when i took off it was basically a burnout... lil too much go pedal the i heard POP. Ill add modifier when I get the truck back but I am seeking LSD parts right now.
