OK..... I need some clarification on the rear end fluid level.

After reading several threads on the subject I decided to check mine this AM and yes I did have shaving's or graphite substance on the magnet which when I wiped it clean it didnt really feel gritty so I am not sure what it was.

As far as the level I was not at the bottom of the fill hole but I remember reading a post where someone said it should not be to the bottom of the hole anyway... ... ... so this is where the confusion come's in... ..... where is the level supposed to be?

Also maybe I am going crazy but the fluid smelled like grapes to me is this a special brand for the rear end... ..... or should I stop smelling the oil

Thanks

Jim

Put the fluid level where the manual says it should be. The fluid stinks. Diff fluid always does. It is special in that it is the cheapest oil DC could find.

Finding a little grit or fine shavings on the magnet it pretty much normal wear. I changed my differential oil out at about 35K and it was pretty dirty looking. I tow only two or three times a year. I just fill it up to the drain hole.

Thanks..... That is the same thread I saw the other day

The gray matter on the magnet was more like goo... ..... I guess this is normal I will keep a close eye on it since I had a 2002 Dodge gasser with 17000 miles on it lose the rear end this past August coming home from Indy... ... ..... Thats a different story though!!

Thanks
