Friend has 2006 3500 dually cab and chassis and 7400 miles on it and the rear end has gone out. He has had problems from early on, like noise and speed sensor went out. The fluid was apparently replaced by a local shop and was the wrong kind. What does the 2006 and 2007 use in the differential?

Synthetic, right?

If your rear went bad in 7400 miles, there was something either setup wrong, or a bad part from the factory. This is why you have a warrantee. Do not worry, this is not an indication of the quality of the rear Dodge is using now.

why would the rear end lube be changed out at 7400 miles or before in the first place???

what is a rear diff speed sensor?

why did he have some shop messing with it at those miles? would you not take it to the dealer for those kind of problems at that milage???

sorry but none of this is making any sense to me but i am just trying to understand this. though i have never been the sharpest tool either:)

The way I understand it is when having the truck serviced at the local lube shop, they opened the fill on the diff to "check" the level and the fluid was milky looking so they changed it. I NEVER let them open MY diff unless there are signs of a leak on the housing. Do you guys agree with not having it checked unless there are signs of a leak??

I understand the speed sensor is located in the diff somewhere. Dodge replaced it after only 2000 miles. Then when having it serviced, the local lube shop found it looked milky. Anyway, the Dodge dealer and the local lube shop have gotten together and they are replacing the rear end. My friend is worried he will have problems on down the road but I think not if they replace everythingg in the diff. While they are repairing the diff they are also replacing the throw out bearing and another part of the clutch. Making loud noise.

the milky looking stuff is caused by a spray they use to setup the ring and pinion depth.

If you read some of the " Break In" posts on TDR is mentions that everyone should CK all the Fluids the DAY you drive your new truck home. Chrysler is known for under or orver filling lots of stuff!!! If you never look, you never know! LOLOL I do agree with changing all the fluids yourself if you can so you know what you put in. I changed my diff fluid at 500 miles. Was milky as well. Put my PML cover on and filled her up with AMSOIL 75/110. A little extra protection for pulling...

the milkyness can also be cause the truck was just running. the gears turning, slinging oil all over the place. . . it's gunna get air in it, which will turn it a milky color. that doesnt mean the fluid is bad.
