Whats lube works best in the dana 70 rear? Is there any advantages to running synthetic lube? How about friction modifiers, are there differences between brands?

I have had good luck using the Amsoil series 2000 75W-90 gear lube. You do not need any fricton modifiers.

Synthetic will turn a small leak into a big leak. Some have had to replace wheel seals shortly after switching to sythetic in the rear. If you have limited slip, I wouldnt care what lube you buy, I'd put a bottle of friction modifier in it. On the lube of choice, any 80-90 weight dino oil would be good. I prefer napa over the other local part stores. It goes with about everything, it doesnt really matter what you put in, aslong as you change it at the correct interval, and in the rearend's case, if you submerged it in water. If you back a boat in the river, lake often, I wouldnt spend high dollar on lube, buy a good quality 80-90 conventional lube, since you will need to change it often. Bill

I vote Amsoil.

It has a seal swell additive and will not cause leaks. In many cases it will restore life to the seal.

Drain your old oil, put in the 75-90 and forget it. If you have a means of taking a temperature. You would see a big drop. (less friction)

That leak talk is an old wives tale. If you have a leak, you have a leak.

If there is crudd keeping the oil in, a good synthetic (there are many) will clean it out or leak past it.

Most heavy weight oils have sulfur in them for shear properties (thats the stink you smell) synthetics don't.

Sorry, I had to do it! :D :D :D

Boy, hasnt your woman told ya that K-Y doesnt leave the nasty film that Vaseline does. Slipperier when cold, too. ;) :p

Seriously, I've had good luck with Mobil1 75-90 in the diff (there, CB). Sometimes I've had to replace seals soon afterword, but like EZGZ said, it most likely was started to begin with, just not as bad.

I just got a 5 gal pail of amzoil 75/90 series 2000. I have to change all compartments in my ram (already has amzoil) and introduce to the rears in my Durango.

Good point about having to change oils often due to axle submersion, though I personally do not see that much water.

To make a believer out of anyone in regards to syn gear lube, just do a bottle shake test at room temp. The syn will be like motor oil. That alone is what sold me.
