My 97 2500HD was a Dana 70 w/4. 10 Trak-Loc for sure, then again it was a gasser... . maybe that has some bearing?

If I am correct the auto 2500s came with the 70 and manuals had the 80. This is for the Diesels, I don't know about gassers. My '98 was originally a 5 speed with dana 80 (8800).

all second gen 2500 autos are dana 70's the manuals and all 3500's are 80's

now another question a 4. 10 srw dana 80 should be able to simply change to 3. 55 gears out of an 01 (i think) 3500 right. no need to change carriers or anything like that.

A Dana 80 with 4:10 gears uses a different carrier than the 3:55 gears.

A Dana 70 will interchange 4:10 & 3:55 with the same carrier.
