Pulled the cover on my donor rigs rear end. Looked like it hadn't been changed for a long time. Rusty swamp water colored oil drained out. Got to looking at the carrier, I suppose, and it looks like something is missing  . Is this just a open diff? Didn't look the same as my 89's open diff. Or are there clutch packs, springs or something missing from my at one time limited slip rear end? Thanks.

Bill

That is a standard open differential, it doesn't have the space for the limited slip clutch packs. You can install a lock-right locker or other similar locker in it, but that dif never had a limited slip in it.

LOL, thanks guys. How bad is rust on the ring gear? This thing actually had rust on it and inside the cover:rolleyes:. I imagine this is why one should regularly change the gear oil or soon after you go through water.

looks like the highly thrown away open rear end
Lol, not this one, it will replace the Dana 60R in my crew.

I wouldn't worry about a little rust. Most of my covers I take off have rust above the oil line. That tin cover is cheep, and rusts easily with any amount of moisture. When a diff sets for a long time it will have some rust on it. If you would have driven that truck from the south to indiana you probably wouldn't have known there was any in there.

Yeah its open, yeah your right rear is gonna spin easy. Driving a mild cummins truck with open rear is really dissapointing. Never feel the power until about 4th gear. All else is tire smoke. *YOU* *could* weld the spiders together and have a lincoln locker  . They aren't much fun to drive and hard on tires.
