I have a 2001 2500 Cummins geared 3. 54 and a five speed trasmission with 41,000 miles.

Recently the ABS and brake lights on the dash have been coming on at random times. I had the truck in for service last week and they checked the ABS problem out. The dealer said that no codes were in the computer, but they felt that the ABS light coming on at random was due to a bad ABS sensor in the rearend. The ABS light would not stay on if I shut the truck down and cranked it back up. Also the speedometer would not read in second gear until the truck was over 10-12 mph.

The day after I had this work done, something punched through the rear end cover from the inside. I immediately parked the truck and had it taken to the dealership on a rollback on Monday morning. The dealership said that they had to order a whole new rearend at a cost of 4000 and some odd dollars. Thankfully I have extended warranty and it will only cost me 100 dollars. The dealer said that there was some vibration in the rear end, but I had not noticed it.

I was just wondering if anyone else had had this problem or if this is a fluke problem. I do not tow heavy loads, mostly less than 5000 lbs. The dealership has been very helpful.

rear end problems

Any time that they work on the truck get them to do an as found as left with spects this provides a bench mark for future and how things have changed. This provides you to varify a setting from the maintance manual. Does anyone see them using a torque wrench although spects are in the manual from alot of things???I don't see them using it very often.

My 01 3500 had the rear end blow out at 100,000 kms. The dealer got it through but it took over 2 months to get one and Chrysler didn't do anything about the down time. We do pull heavy loads but it could have been the driver being a bit hard on it in a nasty job site. Although i have a 96 powerstroke with 450,000 plus kms on it and other than bearings its been through the same kind of abuse so i don't know what to think.

I was at the dealership today with my mothers jeep and talked to the technician who was working on my rear end trouble. He told me that a bolt in the rear end had backed out of where it was suppossed to be and had caused my troubles. They have ordered a whole new rear end including the housing. They said it was busted up pretty good inside. The technician said this is the first of the Dana rear ends he has seen do this and he had been working there for 9 years.

Thanks for the replies

No Dana 80 problems with our previous 1996 3500 V-10 dually or our current truck, both of which have spent their lives towing heavy 5th wheels. Our current truck hits the road towing at 10,380 lbs GVW (10,500 lbs GVWR) and 21,180 lbs GCW (21,500 lbs GCWR). Both have used synthetic 85W-140 rear axle lube.
