If you do any heavy towing, especially at sustained highway speeds, you stand a good chance of damaging the differential. They get hot enough to burn the paint right off the cover, what do you think would happen to regular oil? There is a reason they spec synthetic, and a regular change interval.

what would happen if you put normal old gear oil in the rear diff.

I can't speak on the AA. I used Mopar synthetic in my 98 Dana 70 and changed it per the manual through 2 carrier bearing failures. The last time an "old timer" rear end specialist replaced the carriers and used regular 90-140 and it is coming up on 75K again with no problems so far. If you have a rear end

specialty shop in your area talk to them. I doubt they have as much experience with the AA as the Dana 70, but they can help you with real world experience.

I totally agree with BHolm ^^^. I think the test/answer to your question would come out in how the regular oil affected the overall lifetime span of the rear end, it may shorten the lifespan? Since the manufacturer makes the recommendation to use synthetics, it would be a good idea to at minimum folllow the manufacturer recs. Now, if something BETTER comes along that would be an improvement over the synthetics, that to me would be seen as something to consider.

I used to tow 26K with a W150 before we even had synthetic. I have only torn up one rear end in my life and did it twice using the Mopar sythetic recommended for towing changed every 15K.

I had to replace the entire housing once, but the synthetic did protect the paint on my differential cover, I guess!:-laf
