Just rebuilt the rear differential in my truck, it spun the drivers side main bearing on the differential carrier. It would have helped if the previous owners had serviced it, the pan had not been off. Therefore no change of fluid, ever!! Should change it every 30,000 miles or so, or once a year. I should have changed it when I got the truck but just had not done it yet, probably would not have helped the bearing was too far gone when I got it.
I did it all myself, lot of fun!! except I did have machine shop pull and replace some of the bearings that I could not pull. It cost me just over $200. 00 for the bearings and seals, $50. 00 for tools (2 and 9/16 inch socket for spindle nut). I took Friday 12/1/00 off and worked on it, finished about 6:30pm. Now I am very sore!!!!
I had to grind down the shoulder that the driver's side carrier bearing presses against (by opening to axle tube) as it spun a grove in the seat, I shimed that side for the loss of metal, when I put it back in it was a tight fit but it went in. The differential sounds very good now. Thank God!!
Take this as a testimonial to proper maintenance, oil etc. may cost some but not as much a iron, and labor.
