I just changed the rear gear lube. I check the plug after each trip to TX and back about 2600 mile round trip. This is the amount of metal filings after each trip. I don't think the stock lube is up to par when towing loads. I went through this with my 04 and 3 posi units until I found a lube that worked like it should. You guys might want to change to your favorite lube. I will be changing mine every 15k. Now this is only a problem for trucks that tow a lot and these posi's are designed to make some filings filings but dam. ATTACH=CONFIG]93849[/ATTACH]

Mine didn't have that much metal on it when I changed it at 15,000 miles. About 8,000 miles was towing my 15K fifth wheel and most of the rest was hauling my Lance camper. I seldom drive empty.

I would bet the lube I changed to will cut the filings in less then half. I have an auction to go to in TX. I will post a picture when I get back and see if it helps. I don't think the rear end has a problem that only leaves the oil. I wouldn't doubt they use a good oil. I tried a few good oils on the last truck then after the second posi did a bunch of research and found one that cut down the filings to little of nothing. We'll see next week hopefully.

So what is this secret oil you are using? I just use Napa 85/140 in all my rigs, no problems at all.

I wonder how many rear end failures are legitimately caused by lube choice?

As new gear sets are wearing in, there will always be metallic fines produced with less being produced over time.

This was at 65K towing a combined 28-29K with a 3:42 rear end. Very LITTLE on the magnet. Had at least 40K on the AMZ/OIL 75/110 SevereGear. Was also using a MagHytec cover.

I use Castrol 140 Synthetic. After this run the plug didn't look as good as I hoped. The metal filings don't come from the ring & pinon if they did they wouldn't last very long, they come from the area of the helix gears against the carrier housing while in a turn under heavy load. The helix gears are forced out against the housing and when you are in a turn they rotate. The heaver the load the harder they push against the housing. The housing is a much softer metal then the gears including the ring and pinon. Gears usually chip or the filings are more like slivers. The housing is soft enough to make that really fine stuff you see on the plug.
