The brake lights on my truck will come on for no apparent reason. This has happened about 4 times in the past month. The only remedy has been to disconnect both batteries and then reconnect. Today I tried this procedure and they still will not turn off.

Has anyone experienced this problem or can give me some ideas as to where and how to check?

Thanks,

Richard

Have you checked or adjusted your brake light switch at the top side of the brake pedal? My cruise control would not work on my 94 Ram a while back. I did some reading and found out that the brake switch may be out of adjustment. I went thru the procedure and fixed the problem.

Thanks JD for getting back to me. I think our trucks are quite different. After some more investigation and getting hold of a manual, I see that I have a brake light switch and brake pressure switch. The latter plugs into the ABS.

Looks like another trip to the shop!

Thanks again,

Richard

check the brake LIGHT switch, that is the only thing that makes the brakes lights on the back of your truck to come on and go off. Brake pressure switch I would imagine have to do with the dash idiot light and actual braking parameters when stopping.

The brake light switch is normally a open circuit when not depressing the pedal and closed when the pedal is pushed, which inturn pushes in the plunger on the brake light switch activating your brake lights. either that switch is broken, has come loose or needs adjustment/replacement, which you can do on your own to save the cost of going to a shop.

Do a google search for this problem and you will have ample reading.

Good luck,

J-

I have had this same problem. I finally unplugged the trailer hookup on the hitch and they went out. I took the plug apart and there was a strand of the copper wire that was loose and had fallen where it bridged 2 terminals. Removed it and it hasn't happened since.

It just about drove me crazy. The only way I knew it was happening was that my turn signals wouldn't work right.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. This a. m. I took the truck into the shop and they said it was the brake switch - common problem on these Dodges so they said and replaced it. Got home and had the same problem so back I went.

Long story short. By unplugging each fuse in the Power Distribution Center I found that when I unplugged the "Trailer Fuse" the stop lights on the truck went out. I then hooked up the truck to the trailer plug and with the fuse out both the trailer and truck stop lights lit up!

I then checked the brake controller (something I should have done much earlier) and found an error number "8. 8. " usually it shows "O. C. " for open circuit when the trailer is not hooked up. So I am pretty sure the problem is with the brake controller.

One thing the mechanic told me was that they have seen a couple of problems with the PDC. Everything just about is routed through there. He went on to say that one customer came in with the radio not working and another with no headlights and it was attributed to the PDC.
