Get this:

My buddy just bought another used Ram with a Cummins. The rear main is leaking so he went to the Dodge dealer to get an estimate.

The service manager says" If the seals are leaking, the bearings are junk. "

A local Cummins shop said,"That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. "

Any opinions out there?

Thanks,

Gene

Yep, Gene, that's about the stupidest thing I've heard in a while.

Well, there was the one about the..... oops, better not!

The truck was most likely sitting for awhile and the rear main dried out. It will most likely stop after it is run for awhile.

Yes they will dry out and crack if the've been sitting a while.

My dad was restoring an El Camino SS and decided to Bomb the engine first. After about 3 months he took the whole car apart and started the Resto. A year later when he was finished he fired her up and let her run a while and then shut it down. The next morning he found some oil drips on the floor and it was the rear main seal. After some muffled cussing he pulled the engine out.

I looked at the 2 pieces and saw dry rot cracks on the top half.
