Do you need any special tools to remove and replace the rear main seal on a 91 1st gen. I have already taken out the transmission and transfer case. If anybody has any info that would be great thanks. :)

The seal kit comes with it's own seal driver and pretty thurough instructions.

just remember the crank has to be BONE DRY when you install the new seal so it can seat properly. the newer sealsare made much better than the old ones. . very easy install and now your driveway will be spotless...

By the way I see you have a auto trans. . now would be a good time to update your flexplate to a 1994- flex plate as the first gen flexer is prone to cracking...

I recommend anyone doing a clutch or flexplate change to replace the rear seal at this opporotunity. . it's just a matter of time before the stock first gen rear main seal starts leaking... .

you might want to check the rear camshaft galley plug for sighns of oil leakage also. i noticed mine was leaking when i had everything out to replace the rear main.

I just got done replacing my rear main seal on my 93 truck. What I found when I got my seal out was a good size groove on the rear of the crank shaft. I had to install a speedy sleave and new seal (Cummins part number 3926126/ cost about $65. 00). That did require a special tool from Cummins. I was able to borrow the tool from the shop over the weekend and got my seal and reapir sleave in with out any problems. Make sure to check your crank shaft where the seal runs at to make sure there is no grooves that might effect your rear main seal from leaking.

Why Not (Chris)
