May-be I have a lemon, may-be not. I have 154,000 miles on my truck. I've got about $14,000 in various repairs in this truck. recently put a transmission in and after that just had u-joints and the drive shop check the drive shaft for balance and found it waaay out. short story, it's driving fine now except. I have a very serious oil leak. I am on the road headed for the northeast. I was hoping this could wait until I got home but it can't. It's really, really bad. developed without warning and no seeping but dripping 3-drops a second when the truck is running, appears to almost stop when the truck is parked. It looks like the middle of the rear of the motor. I am assuming a rear main seal. What is involved? Does the transmission need to come out or just the oil pan? any good leads to a place to take my truck in New Jersey? Thanks for the help in advance!

It could be a two piece rear main seal if thats the case you pull the oil pan to get to it and not the transmission. But I have never had the wonder opportunity to even rebuild a cummins or change the rear main *banging on wood*

It could be the rear main seal but here are some other things to check. The valve covers... top and bottom plate(injector harness) have gaskets and if they leak at the rear will cause the same drip pattern you are talking about. If those covers recently came off, you myght want to make sure they were installed correctly.

Also if the cam walks and pushes the rear plug out causes that same symptom. As for your previous post... . the transmission has to be dropped to replace the rear main seal.

mm, does it leak constantly, or more when it just started cold? If the latter, check the return line banjo on the back of the head, mine was loose twice already. IIRC, it is a 19mm bolt. Mine would leak on first start and pick up all the crud on the way down and look like oil by the time it made down below.

Injector harness has me suspicious. I had a supposed AAA+ Deisel shop do extensive repairs for me in Las Vegas to the tune of $7500 in repairs, including injectors. I ran into some real issues with this place, some of you may remember. Besides I am east now and they are back in Vegas. I'm leery of taking my truck back there in the first place, and I'm not sure they would even honor there warrantee. I only noticed this the other day so I don't have allot of information on this yet. But it leaks when the engine is running mostly. hot and cold. I think it stops or at least slows down when I am parked. I am going to get out there this morning and clean off the valve cover and check it. If it's leaking from the valve cover it must be some leak because I just put in 4 qts of oil. Granted, I hadn't checked the oil for a few fill ups, but you know I will now! I'm not in the position of doing much myself. I need to take this somewhere. I don't think it's a good idea to just keep pumping oil into this thing until I get home. I have about 5,000 miles left on this trip. I am so tierd of getting ripped off on the road. AS I said, I am going east, from Boston to Miami, so any thoughts of trust worthy service helps and greatly appriciated.

Geez, Machinemover, this truck is killing you!

Maybe you'll be lucky this time and it's something simple, like a loose oil pan bolt.

I cringe at the thought of a pushed out soft plug in the back of the block. Hopefully it is just a rear main seal. Best of luck to you. I said to hell with paying other folks and bought a transmission jack, jack stands, and lots of tools just to carry around in the truck for "what if's".

On second thought:confused: Don't common rails use a different cam that has a "fork" behind the gear to keep it from walking like the 12 valves? I've got one in my shed from a CR and I don't see any way it can walk out. I wold definitely clean it and check it out. If you just had the trans serviced be very leery of the rear main seal though.

The rear main is one piece and is removed from the rear after the transmission is pulled. But they hardly ever leak, so check up top first.

well my news went from bad to worse. (Don't let me touch you I may pass my bad luck) The oil was just pouring out so I had to stop in Dayton, Oh. I went to a local Deisel Injection shop. He put it up on the lift right away, called me a few hours later and told me he deffinatly thought it was the rear main seal. Estimate was high but I felt I had little choice $985). I got a call yesterday afternoon and was told they can't budge the flywheel and can't turn it or get to the back bolts. I called Southbend Clutch and he told me to have him go through the inspection hole and the starter hole. He says he called southbend, explained the problem to them and feels the flywheel came apart inside and slipped. They will have to cut the old flywheel off, is what I am being told. I had the flywheel replaced (not under warrantee) a year agoby the dealer. I had the clutch replaced in October. Well I am not going to buy a duel mass flywheel once a year so I elected a southbend replacement conversion. $1200 more and $300 to overnight it to me. Not to mention the labor will go up. Nothing but problems here, seemes like everytime I get this truck straightened out I am in another immediate mess. Next truck, I am canning the Dodges and going with a class 6 or 7. At least I get a sleeper, I'm to old for this crap and have no fight left in me anymore.

WOW, I am sorry to hear about all your problems. That really sucks.

How heavy of loads are you hauling with this truck? How many miles on it?
