Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Rear main seal??

Can the rear main seal be replaced when the transmission is removed or do you have to pull the oil pan too? I believe mine is leaking now.

If you have pulled the transmission, there is no need to pull the pan just to replace the rear main. Although most trucks the same age as ours the pan gasket is leaking too and would be simple to go ahead and change with the transmission dropped.

Trans needs to be pulled. It sits in a retainer, so no 2 piece like on some gassers, where you just roll them in.

To replace the pan gasket, don't you have to lift the engine?
