Working on a 2006 5.8 manual trans. Just got a seal from CumminsNW Part Number 5259499. The last seal I got from Cummins had a sleeve, installing tool and instructions that, IIRC, to install dry. I still have the install sleeve and install tool from the last time, but I need to know if this seal is installed dry or not.

Installing them dry is the only way I've ever seen them done too. Just installed a Cummins seal in a 2nd gen recently but it came with the sleeve, tool and instructions to install dry. I was afraid of driving the seal in crooked (done it before) so I ended up stacking large fender washers over 4 fly wheel bolts and threaded them in until they caught the installation tool evenly. Then it was just a matter of cranking each bolt down 1/2 a turn at a time until the seal was seated deep enough that I knew I couldn't mess it up. I'm sure there's better and quicker ways to do it but ruining an 80 dollar seal left a bad taste in my mouth.
 
Install dry. Use a little soapy water if you absolutely have to. I have had great luck using the Felpro brand seal from my local Napa.
 
Any time we've used a speedy sleeve type of shaft saver/ seal we've always used a small bit of Loctite on the inside of the sleeve. it provides some lube to help it slide on but you have to work fast as once it starts to set your done and it's not moving any more. on the plus side there is no chance of it leaking between the shaft and the sleeve.
 
Install dry. Best consistent results are obtained by pulling the seal retainer off the block, install the new seal in the retainer, install the retainer to center the seal using the installation sleeve, then tighten the retainer bolts.
 
Cummins does have special installation tools for both the front and rear crank seals. They are way over priced but if you do many it willake your life easier. Installing a cummins wear sleeve will require a tool to install them reliably they are very thin
 
Thanks ALL! don't know when/why Cummins stopped including the sleeve and driver with the kit, but it was less than $15.00 for the seal and I still have the stuff from the old kits.
