I have a strange ping or ringing sound from the rear of my truck when ever I go from forward to reverse and when I stop. It sounds like it's reverbing through the drive shaft. I checked the u-joints and they have no play in them but I haven't pulled the rear cover. It's going to the shop in the next week but I figured I ask to see if anyone has a clue.

Excess backlash may clunk at the times you described. It could ring, but I don't know.

consider this, the brake drums are like bells, a little loose part in the brakes could make them ring.

John,

I had my rear end apart last year to get work on the axle housing. When they reassembled, using the shim thickness that had come out, there was a "jingling" sound, like keys, when it got up to speed. The shop owner thought the gears weren't meshed enough. After increasing the shim thickness several times, it was ok.

Mine does the same thing. Most likely because I have about 1/16" of backlash :(

I am having the rear rebuilt sometime this summer hopefully. Half tempted to put a good GM Corp 14b in there and regear the front to 3. 73

Heres a update on the noise. The yoke on the drive shaft was so worn that it was causing slop in the u-joints. It detroyed new u-joints in less then six months :{ The shaft is getting the overhaul this week. I also installed HD steering stabalizer and installed new bushing/spring kit on kingpin to hopefully end the deathwobble  . Haven't been able to try it out yet! (no driveshaft). The rear checked out fine I change the oil once a year or so and use Kendall. 215K I guess I've done something right ;) .

Just had my 3. 54 rear end re-done by Dan at Quad 4x4. The axle end gear and splines were terribly worn but the ring and pinon looked very good. The rear end rang like a church bell when changing directions as you have described. Next time you pull an axle shaft look at the splines very closely for wear. Also, check your vent tube to ensure that it is open.
