I'm getting ready to replace the rear main seal on the Cummins and I was wondering if there is anything else that I should be doing while I'm there. I remember reading a post awhile back that talked about replacement of some other seal on the engine beings that the transmission is out.

Is there any other pointers regarding the rear main seal it would be most appreciated. I replaced the front seal some time ago and that went OK but I want to cover all the bases before I replace this one.

Thanks

Mike

Having a little trouble with the removal of the seal. Tried screwing a couple of screws into the seal and pulling on the screws but the screws just pop out.

At what part of the seal should the screws be inserted into. What size screw should I be using.

Thanks

Mike

Well once I got the right size screw and with pre drilling a smaller hole for the screw, then inserting the screw into the middle of the seal, the rubber part. I then took a claw hammer and just like pulling a nail it came out. It was so easy at that point I had to make sure no one was watching. I still have a few questions. How can you tell if the crank has a grove. I can see a wear mark but its hard to tell if there is an actual grove. I made a mark on the crank when I initially started the screw process (I didnt pre drill and I was using the wrong kind of screws)and ended up marking the surface of the crank. I'm thinking this will not make an effective seal when I put in the new one.

Should I smooth out the burrs that I put in the crank and install the sleeve and larger seal or will I be OK with the stock size seal and no sleeve.

Thanks

Mike

With your bare finger the crank should be smooth as glass. Any grooves that are worn in will be felt, and any burrs from nicking the crank as well. Use some 400+ grit sandpaper or emery cloth to smooth out any nicks. If the groove is too deep from the old seal, you will need to install a speedy sleeve.

As far as any other seals to replace... None that I can think of.

Thanks Sticks for the reply. Does the Speedy sleeve come as a kit with a new seal. I'm assuming that I can get that from a Cummins supply house. Really stupid on my part. I put nicks in two different areas on the crank. Patience is a virture. #@$%!Once I pre drilled the hole and had the right screw it was a piece of cake. Are there any tricks to getting the sleeve on the crank?

Thanks again for the response.

Mike

For starters you can make sure the crank is cold. Warm the sleeve in an oven and prepare for a quick install. Use a block of wood and make sure you drive it on square. It may come with an install tool, not sure. Since you nicked the seal journal you definitely need the sleeve.

Ordered the seal kit with sleeve from local repair shop. $88. 00 plus tax. Be here next week. Hsmith thanks for the pointers on the sleeve. Can anyone tell me about the rear cam plug that a few people have said that its a good idea to change that also. Parts house couldn't help me.

Thanks

Mike

Any takers on the rear cam plug. Dodge dealer and Cummins parts house couldn't help me. I'm thinking I may have the wrong name.

Mike

Number 11 is the cam plug.

Part # 3900687

Number 21 is the o-ring behind it.

Part # 3926047

The top picture shows those items. It is a tricky picture, tell youself that you are looking at the up at the empty engine block and then the picture will make sense. Took me a minute to get the perspective.

Cummins couldn't provide these numbers????? Wow!! You were using the correct term by the way. At least it made sense to me... ... ... ... .....

Thanks mwilson for the reply. Does that plug just pull out our is it threaded into the block? Is this something that is accessible from topside of the engine?Would you have to pull the transmission just to service the Cam plug?

Looks to be real accessible from the back side of the engine with the transmission out. That what I will be doing. Looks to be cheap insurance. Thanks again for sharing.

Take Care

Just got back in town and ready to install my rear seal and crankshaft wear sleeve. I got the part from a Cummins dealer. Its part#3926126. The instructions that came with the seal say to leave the wear sleeve intact when installing. I was going to put the wear sleeve in the oven to let it expand to make the installation easier but with the instructions that came with it I'm not so sure unless I put the whole seal in the oven and I'm not sure thats a good idea. The instructions also say to use an install tool which I don't have.

Anyone have an Idea where I can get this tool and what its called. In talking to Dodge they have the seal without the wear sleeve for just about the same money that I paid for the seal and wear sleeve from Cummins. Dodge wants over $300 just for the wear sleeve.

I also have a concern that the seal I have from Cummins is the right one. They checked the # twice and said it was the right one per my engine #.

It looks a little different from the one I'm taking out.

Sorry for the long Post

Thanks,Mike

Dodge gave me a quote for $159. 00 for the wear sleeve. That's better then $300 that they initially said but still way more then I paid for the seal and sleeve from Cummins. I'm still wondering about this install tool that the Cummins directions say I need to install the seal. I know that the last time I bought the front seal it came with an install tool of sorts. I believe it was a plastic piece but I'm not sure. That's been awhile ago. Anyone have an Idea about this install tool that Cummins is talking about?

Thanks

Mike
