Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Loud bang when hitting brakes in reverse

A week ago I had Rancho 9000's put on my truck because I couldn't break the bolts free on the shocks.

After driving about two miles with the new shocks I heard a loud clunk come from the rear. I immediately pulled over and checked the shocks thinking a bolt had pulled loose. I could not find any problems at the time.

This afternoon I noticed that the rear sway bar where it attaches to the fram near the top of the shock on the passenger side was hanging down. That loud clunk was the bolt either shearing off or the idiots who put on the shocks forgot to correctly fasten the bolt.

The bolt looks to be about 2 - 2. 5 inches long by 1/2 inch in diameter. It has a castle nut on the end and a hairpin to make sure nothing comes out.

My question is this: What size bolt do I need and what grade? Where can I get this bolt. I tried a hardware store. They had grade 8 bolts but no castle nuts and no bolts with a hole for the hairpin.

This is for an early 2001 Ram 2500 4x4 long bed with drum brakes.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I'm sure that the stealer would have it. I am also sure that a grade 8 bolt with a self locking nut, with the nylon thingie inside it will never come out.

I assume that you are talking about the connection of the stabilizer bar link to a bracket on the frame. The parts book for model year 2000 shows the following:

P/N 11505098 BOLT, Hex Flange Head, M12x1. 75x60, Stabilizer Bar Link

P/N 6502697 NUT, Hex Flange Lock, M12x1. 75, Stabilizer Bar Link to Frame

There is no castel nut or cotter pin shown at the frame connection.

The stabilizer bar is connected to the stabilizer bar link using a stud that is a part of the link, along with a castle nut and cotter pin.

Thomas,

Thanks for the part numbers. I guess I will have to find a dealer that has the part. I looked on the other side of my 2001 and it has the castle nut and hairpin so I assume the same on the other side.

ACoyle,

I had looked at grade 8 bolts with lock washers, I hadn't considered a locking nylon nut.

Does anyone know what torque to tighten the nut?

Thanks

Again, for model year 2000, both the link upper nut and the link ball stud nut torque to 50 foot pounds. I imagine model year 2001 is the same.
