Rear wheel ABS speed sensor

Has anyone replaced their diff-mounted rear wheel ABS speed sensor? ... If so, how much did the stealer charge for it? (I may be assuming in vain that its still available )

I didnt install it, but took it to stealer, on the parts price list on my bill, RWAL speed sensor like $73. wiring harness for it $73. This did not correct my antilock problem. My rear wheels still lock up and guess what the stealer did... unplugged, cut wire, or fuse so that my amber antilock warning light doesnt appear on message center. So I'm in the process of tearing into them, will go see them sat. Over the phone they say if that doesnt correct prob, then its the hydraulic valve which is $340. They also broke three bolts that hold bed to frame back there, and didnt replace them. . my lawyer says they might have just bought me that $340 hydraulic valve. . we'll see.

Thats really messed up!... Indeed you should be ripping that dealer a new one!!... I had a rear-wheel lock problem once on an old VW without anitlock brakes... Turned out to be the brake fluid was in such bad shape that it gummed up in the line and created this kind of "check valve" allowing brake pressure to enter the wheel cylinders but not flow back out when the pedal was released.

I replaced mine about a month ago. With tax $103. The warning lights are off now but I'm not sure the brakes work correctly. Rich

I fixed mine.....

Behind the glovebox, find black box (@ 4"x5"x1"), unplug harness, remove mounting screws (3), take black box and throw in trash, use holes left in firewall to mount Isspro EV sending units. ABS works great now:-laf

ISSPRO???

My light has been on for months with no lockups yet (also no snow yet). Brake experts are baffled. What's that ISSPRO gadget and where can I get me one? Is it easy to install - same wire plug & configuration or does it have to be tinkered with?

UHH.........

What I meant was that I disconnected and threw away the ABS controller, and installed the sending (or amplifier) units for my ISSPRO pyro, oil pressure and water temp gauges. Sorry for the confusion. IMHO, the RWAL system on these trucks isn't worth having, therefore, I removed it. I run 35" tires, and have the hydroboost system off a 98 on my truck, and with my brakes adjusted correctly, they all lock up at the same time, front & rear. I plan on adding an adjustable proportioning valve in the system so I can adjust the front/rear bias for when i have a load on.

I realize that the system is designed to improve the trucks braking performance & safety, and I'm not saying everybody should run out and unplug theirs. It just works better for ME this way, your mileage may vary.

Hutchew, Lock up your brakes? What's that? I didn't know a first gen would do that. My 90 wouldn't lock up with both feet and a prayer. Do I need to start over redoing my brakes? (I did replace my master cylinder with a NAPA, which seems to be a popular headache on the tdr)

Convert your wimpy vacumn assisted brakes over to a later style Power steering assisted system. Unbelievable how much better the brakes are now. When I first got my truck, it had a 360 gasser motor, with stock vacumn brakes and stock tires, and it wouldn't stop either. In fact, I have never had a Dodge truck that had brakes worth bragging about until now. I have to be carefull, It doesn't take much effort at all to put on a sliding smoke show.

Tha conversion is fairly easy to do, and the stock hoses all match up. The only thing you gotta do is fab a mounting plate, and shorten the brake push rod. Let me know if you are interested, I'll post some pics of my install.



Forgot to add... You will have to adapt your brake lines to the new style. They won't bolt up. I had a local hose shop make up my adaptors, works great.

Exhaust Brakes

Exhaust Brakes work!, there is no question about it in my opinion. When ever I drive another Diesel w/out one, I always start grabbing for a switch to turn it on Seriously though, it is a pricy addition, but will boost your confidence, and save a lot of wear on your brakes. Personally I think that my truck stops pretty good, but when I'm empty, I like to downshift with the exhaust brake, and I usually don't step on the brake pedal much at all.

The only thing I don't like is that Gear Vendors doesn't recommend using one with their overdrive. So I just turn the overdrive off, and the brake on.

Its too bad our 1st gen engines' valve trains didn't come sprung to allow for a simple bolt-on of an exhaust brake.
