Afternoon all,

I have a 1993 D250 and I need to replace the rear wheel cylinders. When I search on Napa for the parts I need to know the brake dimensions like:



11" X 2 1/2 " brakes or

12" X 2 /2" with 1" Bore



What I need to know is what am I suppose to measeure: brake shoes? and I have no idea what the bore is?



Any information will be greatly appreciated.

i had to do this aswell, i cant remeber off the top of my head, but i do know there is a sticker under your hood that should tell you the brake shoe size. i will go check my records and see if i have the cylinder/bore size any where. hope this helps a little
 
ok, checked the records.



shoes: 12" x 3"



cylinders: didnt have the specs, but i do have the part # from the receipt: "BWC SWC1030 CQ RED WHEEL CYL"

and

"BWC SWC1029 CQ RED WHEEL CYL"

12x3 brakes, dont mess with the 2. 5".



WHeel cylinders are available in 7/8, 1, and 1-1/8 bores. The 1tons got the 1-1/8 bores, but former TDR member Case500D said he got better seat of the pants braking feel from the 1" cylinders (I guess more force being applied to the 3" shoes, as the 1-1/8 could be too much volume/ not enough force to fill up for maximum braking).



Unless you tow super heavy (15K behind the truck), I think the 1" wheel cylinders would do you well, along with 3" shoes. The drums are the same for 2-1/2 or 3' brakes- you just have less area being used with the 2-1/2" shoes. Make any sense?

The 1tons got the 1-1/8 bores,



Not in all cases... my 91 D250 had 1 1/8 bores stock. It also has a 1 ton axle... .

I think whatever Dodge had in stock on a particular day is what they used.
 
I think the duals use 1-1/8, SRW would be 1" on the 1T. Too large a rear cylinder will lock the rear wheels too soon which really screws up braking.

Finally, what is the proper name / PN for the gasket that goes between the axle and the wheel hub.

Ok, I go for the 12" X 3" Shoes



The wheel cylinders that go with the 12" X 3" are 1 1/8" bore. Do I get these or do I use the wheel cylinders for the 12 X 2 1/2" which is the 1" bore. (all these specs are from Napa)



I could use either, but would like some feedback on past experiences. .

Get both, put on what was on there, take the extras back. Definitely get the 12x3 shoes. Some people have good luck changing bore sizes, but if it works good now, why change it?

On the RTV, use only a thin bead around the axle. Any extra is going to get squeezed in and out side. You don't want to use a fat 1/4 inch bead and get a gob stuck in the bearings.
 
i got the cylinders from CarQuest which i believe is NAPA parts.



thats what i did, got all pairs they had that 'could' fit, and put on what matched the set already on the truck.
 
Also worth getting the parts kit for the e-brake and making sure it's in good shape. When <strike>Scott</strike> we did my brakes, the hardware and cables for the e-brake were shot.
