Rear end of the trucks has had a vibration in it. . Just thought it was the tires, so we had them Reblanced, and still the same vibration. (This vibration has not always been there. ) The vibration becomes noticable about 30mph and just gets worse. . (at 70-75 its still drivable but anoying. ) We jacked up the truck, and removed all the rear tires. . at 70 the same vibration. . At 70 we felt of the center carriar and it felt to be running smooth. . (could it still be bad?) We removed the hubs and turned them 180degrees, and try it again. . still the same. The bearings on the axle feel to be tight. . With the truck in P or N @ 2000 rpms you do not notice any vibration. Next we will remove the drums, and check it again at 70mph. . Try swapping drive shafts?? (just don't know how it could get out of balance. . unless the weights fell off??) Also all the U-joints feel good. .

Any Ideas... It is driving us NUTS.....

Thanks

Bryan

(This is on the 95, auto 3500 w/170,000miles)

Check the u-joints and the pinion bearings. The u-joints may feel tight while on the truck but they could still be bad. If it the dually truck you are refering to, check to make sure that however balanced your tires lined the pin back up on the rear wheels. Also put a straight edge across all four back tires to ensure that one is not out of round causing one side to have two tire ecentri to each other. Just a couple of thoughts, Danny

About a week ago my 96 CTD 2500 4x4 started to do the same thing. From 30mph and faster speeds it will about shake me out of the cab. The tires were balanced 3 times and it did not change a thing. The gear shift in the cab shakes like crazy from about 30mph on up to highway speeds. Any suggestions would be helpful!!

I second the U-joint check. Even tho you don't have any play in them. They could be rusted up inside. 94 and up went to non- greaseable U-joints. So pull the drive shafts out and move the U-joints threw the full range of motion and see if there is any binding or roughness. If there is replace them.

If you find any bad. I recommend doing all of them and the carrier. The other ones won't be in much better shape from age. Plus you wouldn't want to do the other ones a few months later.

While the rear shaft is out. Check to see if your pinion nut is tight. I haven't seen any 80 model rears loosen the pinion nut. But I have seen 70's do it.

I've had the same and it always turned out to be the carrier bearing.

1980 3/4 Chevy with a bad carrier bearing or rubber doughnut.

1989 Dodge 1 ton single wheel CTD 5 speed with a bad carrier bearing and my 1996 3500 CTD 5 speed with a bad carrier bearing.

The bearing goes bad and / or the rubber doughnut around the bearing fails (breaks allowing movement under load or torque)

I'd look really close at the Carrier Bearing.

Good luck

vibration

Switched tires on my truck to rule out that was making my truck shake, still shakes. Now the other night it started pulling to the right going down the road and still shakes real bad from 35mph on up? Any other suggestions, front wheel bearings anyway to check them?

mine was shaking pretty bad in a horizontal/lateral/left-to-right direction... ... i had the p. o. s. tires balanced again and it took most of it out..... good luck. scott.
