I noticed a little button on the bottom of my rear view mirror this morning on the way to work. You push the button up and it glows a soft green. I have only had the truck since January 2000, and this is the first time that I wanted to know what that button is...

Thanks

Rick

Rick the button is for dimming. It replaces the manuel flip switch on older vehicles

Don't you have an owners manuel?

Yeah, just like Bob said, you have the automatic dimming mirror. The mirror tints itself when headlights beam right at you. Although it might not dim if your back window is tinted very dark.

AUTOMATIC DIMMING MIRROR - OPTIONAL

This mirror automatically adjusts for annoying headlight glare from vehichles behind you. You can turn the feature on or off by pressing the button at the base of the mirror. A LIGHT IN THE BUTTON WILL INDICATE WHEN THE DIMMING FEATURE IS ACTIVATED

Cheers,

Problems w/auto dimmer...

The auto dimmer thingy works fairly well except, when you have a flatbed with louvred headache rack (or anything else that blocks portions of your rear window.

The mirror has a light sensor on it to tell it when to dim. If a shadow from whatever is over your rear window falls on the sensor, it brightens the mirror up, letting the guy's lights blind you.

I sure wish I had the old fashioned manual kind of mirror! Has anyone figured out how to take one of these mirrors apart? It seems to me you could bypass the sensor somehow and make the switch dim the mirror when ON, no dim when OFF. Or, maybe figure out how to remote-mount the sensor so the louvres don't get in the way. Either way would make me happy...
