Say It Ain't So!

My powertrains teacher brought a ZF 6 speed in for me and another student to rebuild... here's what we found... Build date on the trans is 3/03 mileage is 80k (this is the second trans already)



This is a pic of the inputshaft / head gear where the main shaft is piloted. The main shaft and the input shaft are both junk, and yes, that's the bearing race you can see, the rollers were nowhere to be found (except the powder on the magnet... )

Not a uncommon problem with the ZF 6 speed at all. Seems that the case is not stiff enough to withstand the torque of the diesel and twists taking out the bearings. :rolleyes:
 
I believe that, it's a neat design though. The main and countershafts are mounted on a center plate that sits between the main housing and the tail housing that holds the reverse idler and O/D. I am sure it creates a weak link though, aluminum and not a real tight press fit...
