I have a 97-3500 12v 5sp that has been slightley bombed by Jerry MClain Diesel in St. Louis (if anyone has heard of him). All I know is that he made some changes in the pump and I think I remember him saying a timing change. he said he done some other things but won't tell because of trade secrets. It does not look like he got into the afc housing because the breakoff screw is still intact. All I know is that it revs a lot higher (I know at least to 3-3. 5k) and the turbo comes in quicker and does have a lot more power. Smokes black quite a bit when you really nail it. If you guys have any idea about what he has changed it would help me to know what direction to go to bomb it further. He charged me $400 in 1998 to do it. What do I need to do to get around 300hp or above. I see a lot of post with 370 diamond B, TST plates and 16cm exhaust housing installed, but no info on what kind of HP increase or torque specs. My last question is on the different #TST plates which number gives the more HP, higher or lower (ie... #4TST or #11TST)

Thanks ahead of time.

Rick:confused:

I don't think he could do heck of a lot for the cheap price he gave you without getting into the afc housing. I'll bet he reinstalled a plate and new tamper proof screw, many professionals do.

Trade Secret?

Rick,

IMO, If you paid this guy to bomb your truck, you have every right to know EXACTLY what he done to it. The "trade secret" thing wouldnt fly with me. That guy wont be alive or working on trucks forever and someday you might need to "reverse" what was done to it the first time or it may hamper some troubleshooting that you need to do. I'd try to find out everything that was done if it was my ride, JMO

Chris:confused:

Thanks so far guys, I will try to find out what I can from the bomber. If he won't give me any info..... well... Ill just have to kill em. By the way where is the silencer ring, and what does it do by removing it??

Rick

P. S. tschwab I went to your link but it doesn't give any info about the different numbered TST plates. Only the one specific kit.

Try scrolling down the page, it works for me... ? Anyway, the lower the number of plate, the higher the hp & torque. #8=230, #6=250, #7=270 for the 97-98 auto. You can also contact TST directly or Joe Donnelly (TDR member/writer) and active forum member can help a lot.

Am I stupid!!!

Sorry tschwab

I did not scroll down past the graph of their advertised kit because it looked identicle to the one I saw when I went on TST web site. Thanks, do I feel real dumb:--) Rick

Something interesting about that table. The HP difference between the #12 & #11 in the 215 pump is 50hp. It's only 20hp difference in the auto pumps. This verifies that the auto pumps & injectors don't supply the fuel that the 215 does. So, if the difference in hp between the #11 and the #5 is 60hp in the auto pump, what would you guess it be in the 215 pump? :--)

FORREST

I see you have a #4 in your pump but they did not show it on their chart. With your changes what would you guess that your HP/tq readings would be??

Rick

I don't have a clue Easy. Over 420 & less than 470 I'd guess. Never dynoed. Even though we can extrapolate the chart, no telling if the pump & injectors can supply that much fuel. However, I stepped from the #11 @ 3/4 to the #8 @ 3/4 of the way forward. Huge difference. :) The #8 set there max'd out @ 1350 degrees, pre turbo. The #4 gets to 1500 pretty fast, so it sure is supplying more fuel. Just don't know the result. :D

The #4 isn't rated, but close to the #5 I'd guess. Mark said it was designed for the gov spring kit pumps.

My hwy mileage picked up 1/2 with the HX40. Commuting back & forth to work ... never lower than 18. All hwy ... 21. something.

Forrest, when are you going to put in that zero plate? I wanna see you post on how much egt you can really get :D

You will be ready for air system upgrades real soon ;)

Back to the "tune up" I would bet that McClain loosened the AFC spring adjustment, slid the stock torque plate forward, and went a couple clicks tighter on the stock governor springs. I can't believe these guys still pretend it is magic and no one else will go into the truck in the future to do more.

When you get serious, use the TST AFC Spring Kit, TST #11 or if you will buy a clutch, #10 plate, 16 cm2 turbo housing, and governor spring kit. I've done this a few times and no one goes back. . . only wants more later :D

Joe,

I followed your advice (except for the governor spring kit) and am very happy (for now). Dynoed couple weeks ago on a Dyno Jet? and got 375 hp and 798 ft. lb. torque @ 36 psi and about 1050* F. On the road she'll do 39 psi and 1,300*F plus. I assume that means I'm making more power.

I kept on intending to PM you to thank you, but I think its better this way so all the new people know you are one of the good guys.

Thanks,

Gene
