This question is for the diesel technicians on this forum. Have any of you rebuilt a VP 44 injection pump? Does the procedure include running the pump on a flow bench? Looking at the photographs I saw of one on a diesel product web page, the pump looks pretty basic and appears to not be that hard to rebuild if you have the mechanical skills to do so and a parts kit.

I have had several apart, it does not seem to be too terrible to take apart and put back together. There is one small catch, you need an optical eye to locate the internal tone wheel correctly on the mainshaft. This is the reason for the offset keys. the tone wheel is put on and then the optical eye measures how far off it is from true TDC, an offset key is then used to make everything come out at TDC. If VP-44 TDC doesn't synch up with engine TDC you end up with an active fault code.

At least this is how I understand it.

There are not many Bosch service dealers who are equipped to service the VP44. The dealers who have all of the tools and test equipment have been trained and certifed. The pump is tested and calibrated with special electronic units that electronicaly control the test bench and make all of the tests and adjustments to the Vp44. The technican has no control over the pump oputput parameters. It takes about 2 hours for the test unit to make all the checks and adjustments. Its very accurate and all settings are on a computer print out. All rebuids currently get a new housing and advance component.

Scheid diesel is Bosch authorized... and they have the equipment, parts and knowledge to now rebuild and calibrate. I spoke with Dan Scheid at Muncie today.

Only thing was... I bought a used 10,000 mile pump off of a running truck. I just wanted to test run it before installing... except Dan said it was a couple hundred just to do that because it has to be calibrated during the process. Guess my truck will be the "unofficial" Bosch test bench for me.
